Question Lock Truck While Running?

I have a 2010 4Runner Limit with the key-less system. Does anyone know how I can leave the truck running, but locked? I live on the Canadian prairies and is often cold enough in winter that this is desirable. I've looked all through the manual and tried a number of combinations, but I can't make it happen.

Hey man. What I do Is start the car; pull down the drivers side window; get out and pull up on the auto power window switch and leave. or lock it, hop in the back seat; open door and lock it and then close it.

Brilliant. I tried locking it while running one day and it was like one of those cartoons where you plug a hole in a dam and then it just sprays out somewhere else, I was locking some, closing with the handle up and having them all pop up, or just a couple pop up, etc. It was funny and I just gave up and left it unlocked--small town. Now I'm in the city and it's a bit different.

I haven't tried this yet, but you should be able to use the "mechanical backup key" included with the Smart Key to lock the vehicle with it running.

Stupid question, can you not just use the key fob button to lock it? I have not tried this yet on my LTD either and would like to know!

Thanks buddyjo. I tried this and it works. I panciked a little, since I couldn't use the fob to open the door once it was locked - had to use the mechanical key that comes with it. But that does work. It is amazing to me that they never built a function like this into the system. i.e. there should be a way to do it without having to trick the system.

You can. This is how I warm up my limited. I start it, roll down my driver window. Get out. Lock it with the lock button, then roll up the auto window.

To get back in, you MUST use the mechnical key in the smartkey fob. The unlock button won't work on the remote while it's running.

Works fine for me, wish there was an easier way, but it works

I often wonder if the smartkey isn't in the car for a while if the vehicle will eventually cut off or anything. I've heard in certain cars with a smartkey that if the "smart key" isn't "in the car" when you try to drive off it dies. My 4runner doesn't do this behavior, however, I had my girlfriend hold my key and I drove it around the parking lot and it never did anything wierd. Granted, without the key I wouldn't be able to restart it. There is a "no key" kinda light that lights up on the dash when the car is running and the smart key is *NOT* in the car but it doesn't seem to care.
