Which should I buy? Limited or Trail (Please Help)!!!!
I am talking with a Toyota dealership. I am looking to buy possibly by the end of the month.
Here are my options
1. They have a new 2011 Limited, black, w/3rd row seating and no nav. I assume it has the $200 floor mats, but I don't really want them. I have been talking w/the internet dept. I have been given a price of $39,050.
What I like about the limited is the Full time 4WD and the XREAS suspension. Also like the leather and heated seats.
2. They have a used 2010 TE Magnetic Gray w/KDSS and NAV. It has 3,000 miles. This was a special order to a buyer, because they don't sell them in my region. Anyway the salesman said the guy is "serial car buyer" I would doubt any problems at 3K miles. There asking price is 38,900, but obviously I could get them down some. Plus I was told that becuse it is a certified used vehicle I can get 2.9% financing, which would be a few points less than what I could get for the used one.
I like the looks of the TE. I don't like the cloth seats. He quoted me $1800 to have heated leather seats installed. I would probably just go for heated cloth. It has the NAV that I really want, but not the Full time 4WD. I am unlikely to be doing much rock climbing where I live, but I do see a lot of snow.
Any opinions at all? Do these sound like good deals or should I ask for more off of the new Limited? Any idea what you think I should be able to get the used TE for? I was told the dealership did not put themselves in a hole with the trade in. Thanks in advance!

I paid $38,500 for my TE w/KDSS & Nav, and I had to wait for it to come in from Japan. So he's not giving you a deal @ $38.9K with 3000 on the odometer.

I would go for the limited for snow use because of the full time 4x4. If you are not doing much off roading the Trail would not be as usefull and you would not have to constantly pull the lever back and forth to engage 4x4. Maybe Toyota is listening and will make more models that look like the Trail that most people seem to like better (myself included) or allow more options on the Trail like full time 4x4. There is not emough price difference in the two you are looking at to not justify getting the Limited.

$38,900 is the asking price. He told me they had some room to negotiate. What do you think would be a good offer for me to make? I assume they did pretty well in taking the trade in back. I went to look at it tonight but the manager drove it home of course.

I'd dock a dollar for every mile on the odometer, $1000 for it not being there when you went to test drive it, and I'd demand they install the leather you want with the heaters. If they try and negotiate up from there, just walk away. You can get a new TE with KDSS and Nav for less than their used beast, you just have to be willing to find the dealer willing to work with you.

I agree with the posts so far. If you go with the trail, the current asking price is on the high end imo. I agree that the new limited with full time 4 wheel would be the better choice unless you do serious off roading. It also already has the leather seats and the suspension you want.

Hardcore 4 wheeler, trail; otherwise Limited
The choice is a function of how you want to use it. If you are a hardcore 4-wheeler/rock climber, the Trail is clearly the best choice. Otherwise, if you 4 wheel once in a while, which is most of us, then you want the Limited. Of course looks may pull you for either of them independent of how you use it. Enjoy. I agree that the Trail quote you have is really not an outstanding deal.

Yeah... you can negotiate for a brand new one for that TE price... I'd say high 36k to mid 37K. That's the max I would pay...
otherwise the LE is the better option.

I have the Limited and here are some of the reasons why I selected it over the trail:
-Full-Time 4WD - Very important to me because of our winters and rain filled springs and summers.
-Heated Power Leather Seats / Heated Windshield and Mirrors (winter again)
-X-Reas - Really like the way it handles and reduces the bounce in the ride
-Beautiful 20" Rims (although the tire options are weak)
-The SmartKey Keyless Start System - Very nice - Especially when you walk up to the car and lights under the mirrors go on. Just nice to not have to reach for a key or remote and no worries of leaving it in the ignition
-The SOS safety connect system - very nice safety feature!
-I love the look of the Limited. While the Trail looks great and very sporty, the Limited I think looks sporty, but also very classy and elegant at the same time. Look great on the trail or a night out on the towm.
I do wish the Limited had the rear locker like the Trail - but I think you can add an aftermarket one.
Finally, it's a small thing, but I just don't care for the non-functioning hood scoop. I had it on my 4th Gen Sport and it really bothered me. When I had my 4th Gen Sport, I often wished I had bought the Limited.
You should be able to get a Limited with 3rd Row and Nav for 39K.
If you like the looks of a trail and the features of Limited, take a look at Harper's - He has the sweetest 5th I have ever seen.

I'm with you on most everything. One of the bigger selling points for the husband and I was the dual climate control (a must have in our house). I'm still debating on putting hood scoop on mine to make it a little different.
The only thing I didnt care for was the 20' wheels and the lack of good tires, so i've swapped those for 17'' FJ.

You're right, Ladywolf, I forgot the dual automatic climate control. So very nice to have that feature and it is one of my favorites.
See - there are so many things to love about the Limited I couldn't remember them all

I bought my 2010 Mag Grey TE KDS and mats in So Cal a few months ago. At the time Sat Nav was not offered in my market.
I paid $35,750.00 plus tax. Not a great deal but given how few there were in my market and even fewer in grey it was the best I could do. Went off-roading two weeks after I got it and got a flat and the dealer replaced the tire under warranty so that helped as well.

If you don't plan on doing any 4wheeling then just get the limited. It all boils down to what is more important to you and what it will be used for.

that price is crazy high for a used Trail with KDSS/Nav. it doesn't matter if it's only 3k miles—used is used.
if you really want it, i would make a serious negotiation point of those 3k miles: "why was it sold so quickly?" "i'm really concerned about the previous owner's reasons for getting rid of it." "i'm worried about this." "gee, i don't know."
good luck.
