Baja Rack vs. Gobi Stealth Rack

I would really like to get a roof rack and wanted to get some input from those who have the Baja or Gobi racks.

I like to keep my dog in the back and the rack would allow us to put camping stuff on top or it would be nice if using the 3rd row seats.

I'm leaning towards the Gobi rack because I think it will look better with my non-lifted black SR5.

I know there is a price difference between the two, but I would really like to hear some feedback. Ice Nomad?

thanks!

i have the Gobi rack and i really recommend it, its very low profile, looks great, i do get a lot of compliments on it, its extremely well built i was surprised, and you can walk on it when you are putting stuff up there

Thanks magaca. Any pics of the rack and your sliders?

So, since it doesn't bolt with the front-most supports, is there any movement or is it really secure?

thanks again!

I suggest the Yakima Loadwarrior + extension or even the megawarrior. Cheaper than the baja and the gobi.

Obviously I favor GOBI since I have one, but since my GOBI and a car with a Baja are next to each other a fair amount, below are some additional points.

- GOBI has a metal grate on the bottom (moonroof is open, but you can have them build you a grate if you want to go over the moonroof section), Baja just has bars and an open floor
- GOBI has 2 cross bars that are compatible with yakima and thule boxes and bike carriers. If you wish to carry a rocket box for example up top, you would need to add thule/yakima bars and the connectors for another $150-200. I will post a picture next week as I am about to put my box up top for a ski trip.
- GOBI has 4 light tabs in the front, I do not beleive Baja does
- GOBI is slightly shorter in height than the Baja
- GOBI is made in the USA, Baja is made in Mexico
- both GOBI and Baja you can attach a shovel, hi lift, ax to it. I attach just a shovel and ax on mine and put my hi lift in the car

Baja Rack makes two different accessory light bars that you buy as add-ons. Don't have them though...so I can't give you more details. Does anybody else have the 7" one? If so, please post pics!

A new flat Bajarack for 5th Gens will be out shortly!

iDRiVaTR4 and I have been working with Sergio,Jesus and the engineers at Bajarack on a new full length flat utility rack design for 5th Gen 4Runners. They had already come out with a flat utility one a couple of months back for the FJ's .Loved the simple low profile design!

The first one for the 5ths is going to be made and final fitted to iDRiVaT4R'S TE just after the Holidays but the plans have been finalized.Took us a couple of months of back and forth ideas with them. The price is not known yet and will be announced next week as it's in the bean counters hands now.

We wanted something low profile with an opening for the moonroof and mesh in the middle to stand on or put a tent so it will be a little different then the FJ's. I'll have to ask Sergio if they are going to the same thing without the mesh like the FJ one but he probably will.

Here's what they look like on the FJ's and you can see all the accessories and attachments they have come up with for it. Introducing 2 new racks for the FJ - Toyota FJ Cruiser Forum

Here's the drawings of what the 5Th's will look like......I talked to him today about adding some d-ring tie downs like the FJ one in the front and rear of the mesh.

Some other things to consider: Will there be mounting points for jack/shovel/axe and lights (front/side/rear)? And how far does the extruded metal mesh come forward? One of the issues I found with my rack was that the moon roof does not completely contract into the roof opening, which leaves 3-4 inches of glass exposed. My rack does not extend forward enough to cover that. It was my error, as I failed to realize it during the measurements, but make sure you take it into account before going into production.

Nice looking design though!

This is interesting, i've been holding out for a full length rack and wanted to see what everyone else came up with besides Gobi. I also got a notice that ARB's racks are out not for the 5th Gen's, has anyone seen a picture or price?

This Baja flat rack looks good. Will they make one with the side walls like they made for the FJ also???

Very nice! I doubt I would have gone for the full rack's on the market today but I really like the idea of that simple, yet functional, low profile rack! Very excited to see it mounted next year!

I second that. Can we get a basket version as well, like the FJ LP rack?
