It's called compression braking, I experience it too but I actually like it and take advantage of it when coming to a stop from afar.
This feature was on the 4th Gen too and was discussed on this thread;

I hope this is what you were talking about and one advantage is that it relieves some wear and tear off your brakes from what I've read.
