Engine Idle Speed When Warm...

Hello All,

I was curious what everyone's engine idle speed is when standing on the brakes. Mine is just a shade more than 500 rpm.

Mine also idles around ~600rpm. I'm guessing the engine is idling lower for better fuel economy reasons.

Checked on my way to work.....I have a Scangauge hooked up in my truck and with the truck in Drive,AC off and with my foot on the brake at idle. The idle fluctuated between 528 and 550rpm.

Normal for these and to save gas .

Good to hear others are like mine. My first thought was that it seemed way too low.... and i was going to inquire with the dealer.

Is this low idle the reason why I cannot coast in this truck? In my previous SUV (Ford Explorer) I could let off the gas and coast for 100yds or so on flat land, and often tried to save a tiny bit on gas mi doing that. Now in my T4R I let off the gas it feels as if someone is applying the brake a few moments later??? I assume it normal.. just hoping for an explanation as to why that happens.

It's called compression braking, I experience it too but I actually like it and take advantage of it when coming to a stop from afar.

This feature was on the 4th Gen too and was discussed on this thread;

Code:
http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/72458-engine-brake.html
I hope this is what you were talking about and one advantage is that it relieves some wear and tear off your brakes from what I've read.

Thanks for the link- that is what I was talking about. I tried using search to find that answer, but came up empty handed without the terminology. Haha.
