I have another question regarding the rear door and lift gate speakers --- has anyone replaced those as well as the fronts (and added an Amp)?

I am seriously thinking about doing this, but wonder if changing out the lift gate speakers is even worth the hassle - I think the rear speakers just fill in a void, but do not add to the overall sound quality - probably a 90/10 rule - 90% of the sound comes from the front speakers..

I could just do the back doors with decent 6 1/2 in speakers, and the Amp and leave the lift gate as is...

Would changing the rear lift gate speakers be a waste of money?

The lift gate speakers are on, back door speakers off, when party mode is active. So if you use that, it may improve sound.

The Party Mode might make for a fun Amp install -- I have no idea how you would deal with this by adding a line converter. May not be an issue, but something to think about when upgrading the system.

BTW -- I have found the sound it much better with Party Mode 'on'. Might make sense to skip the rear doors and just replace the speakers in the lift gate..

Has anyone done either or both? What are your opinions?

I replaced all my speakers except the sub. I think it sounds best with "Party Mode" on and the rear seats folded down. Even with the seats up I think party mode sounds better so I'm always partying so I'd skip the rear doors if I did it again. I have the same JL Audios in rear doors.MB Quart 6 inch woofers in the front doors. Here's a couple of speaker pics in these sound deadening pics....... https://picasaweb.google.com/1107645...ingInTheDoors#

Wow Harper7 - I just scanned your build thread -- amazing.

I will take your advice - makes sense to me, but the only issue is that I have no sub - just the base level 8 speaker config. I need to figure this out.

I don't know what to tell you on that. I know others have just just changed everything out and added aftermarket amps with the 8 speaker systems.Your amp is in your HU for the 8 speaker system where the JBL amp/sub is separate and can be hooked into a aftermarket HU.

One thing that sucks about the oem speakers is they are custom made for Toyota,as in where/how they attach. No aftermarket speaker is just plug and play in the hole. I had to customize each one. You'll see what I mean when you take them out and it's not that hard.

I find the T4R non-Nav non-JBL stereo to be unnecessarily complex.

The sound is pretty poor and I just want to replace my 8 speakers with better ones and an amp. I can't figure out whether I can even use aftermarket amps to receive the signal from the HU.

I thought about just replacing the 8 speakers but I'm not convinced that will even help. Clearly the new speakers in the dash help, but what about just swapping out all the door speakers?

As long as you get fairly efficient speakers you should notice a difference. the problem is when you run out of power. the stock HU supplies far less power than an aftermarket HU, or 4 channel amp for that matter.

as far as amps connecting to the factory system, you can get amps with "line level input" which means it takes the speaker input from the HU and amplifies that. not quite as clean as using an RCA type input, but people do it so it can't be bad. basically you would tie the speaker output to the amp, and run new wires to all the speakers from the amp.

I have had the fader turned all the way to the front lately, only using the front door and dash speakers. to me this makes the most sense. also I don't like blasting my dog in the face with music when she's trying to sleep ;)

I'm planning on replacing the dash and front door speakers, then fully removing the rear hatch speakers. they are connected in with the rear channel from the HU anyway, so if you are not in "party mode" they are sharing the power of the rear speakers.

I plan on keeping the head unit in my TE as well.
I wonder how the BAs sound with no amp and just the stock Head Unit..... Any bass?

Yes, could use more bass ---- I am going to explore various options without going overboard on the cost... Adding a sub would be nice, but I am not sure it would be worth the cost. The better option might be to add an amp to increase the output to the BAs and change out the rears with a speaker that will produce more bass.

I just ordered mine from the link you have provided (thanks). The price is really good and hard to resist. I hope they’re not some Chinese knock-offs.

I ordered those speakers. Question, are these the same ones the OP installed. Also, I haven't installed speakers in a car in 15 years. What are the things attached by the wires to the speakers? Looks like the terminal but ive never seen speakers like that. Where do they go in the install?
