Shrinkflation

I see a shortened wheelbase for the Gen 6. Second door and rear quarter panel are both smaller. So some of the mileage improvement was due to shrinkage. This is a compromise between the FJ and the Gen 5 4Runner.. Further validates our purchase of a 2023 ORP.

Wheelbase on the 6th gen is the same as the new LC250 and GX550, 2.4” longer than the 5th gen.

Yeah I read they lengthened it as well. And it's a bit shorter. Now it looks like a station wagon or mini van. I'd be hard pressed to believe the hybrid 6th gen is lighter than a 5th gen with the batteries

Shrinking would've been good for offroading. Instead, the wheelbase got a couple inches longer, and the body got 4-5" longer. I'm sad for that, and actually wish it would've kept the old size or slightly smaller, along with the clearance for larger tires. I believe it was claimed that Toyota had to lengthen the wheelbase and overhangs to get clearance for the larger tires, like 33's, that they're going to be running on higher trims now.

You can spin all this stuff any way you want. Some could say they're getting fewer cylinders for their money, or some could say they're getting more torque for their money.

1. It is a (very) mild hybrid, so the EV battery would not be very big. Not much weight gain from just the battery. It will be nothing like the RAV4 Prime (plug in) hybrid which gained about 800 lbs over the normal RAV4 hybrid.

2. One of the beauties of the 5th generation 4Runner was the short wheel base. Where I go off roading in Colorado, there are numerous very sharp U-turns that I can sweep with one movement. Anything with a longer wheel base (most pickups and 4 door Wrangler) have to back up mid curve to make it around the curve.

Then the larger wheel wells must have forced a smaller second row door as seen in the picture. Based on those optics, I concluded they shrank the size of it.

Yeah I agree the longer wheel base was a questionable move. The 5th gen has an almost identical wheelbase to an Unlimited which I think was a big selling point

That's good, because they won't be on dealer lots for 6-10 months, and it'd be quite hard to get one, especially at sticker, for the first 6+ months after that. My local MSRP dealer had already taken dozens of $500 deposits for the unknown 6th gen 4Runner by the time I bought my '23 in April 2023.

I'm happy I didn't keep holding out with my '99, because I was really sick of driving it, and would not have wanted to keep driving it into early 2025 trying to snag one of the very first 6th gens at MSRP. If I ended up falling in love with it, I suppose I'd try to buy one as early as the third model year, 2027.

For people who camp in the back, it will be more difficult as well since the back seats are raised up higher and not even close to flush with the rear anymore.

They obviously didn’t design it to keep me as a customer. Gonna go hug my 2010.
I understand that the kids want these gigantic screens that look like they’re stuck on as an afterthought, and they want badges all over the place, but one thing I really don’t understand is why you would make gloss black fender flares that don’t even cover the entire wheel well.

The huge screens that stick up over the dash, are getting absolutely out of hand. Not just one model, its all of them. The first one i saw i think was the 2019?? Honda Accord i believe. Saw this big ass Ipad sticking up vertically out of the dash and said
"what the crap is that thing"
Turns out it was factory and now all of the vehicles are going that way. It kinda started with the 2016/2017 ford F250 with the pod they made to hold the screen, then now its just a big flat screen sticking up out of the dash on every model. I much prefer to not have a gaudy screen sticking up out of the dash, thats simply not for me.
Also, take a look at the new Tundra, the fender flares are an afterthought, they dont cover tires, they are molded into and nearly flush with the fender on some models. Some models are black plastic with a dark to light design pattern molded into the plastic. It bothers me when i get close and look at it. Even the models with painted fender flares look out of place. I noticed this new 4runner has that same light / dark pattern on the fender flares as the Tundra. Its almost like a Louis Vuitton pattern or something, it sticks out like a sore thumb and bothers me. Either paint them, or leave them flat black FFS

Took my wife to a concert Friday April 12. Yes I took my 77-year old wife to a Bad Religion + Social Distortion concert. She liked both, but she also did a lot of people watching. The weirdest by far was this woman in front of us who spent the entire time taking selfie video of herself singing to the songs and sending it live to her friends. Oh she was one of the uglier women I've seen in awhile. We were surprised at the number of people recording with smart phones and other cameras. Pretty sad if you ask me. Why not just enjoy the concert and enjoy life as opposed to recording it.
