I finally installed the tranny cooler today, it took a couple of hours because I was really anal about everything being right. It was a pretty easy install.
Model#70264
Mounted the cooler pretty much in the center of the radiator. Used the zip ties to mount it, I have used them on numerous vehicles and never had a problem. The fan blows directly onto the cooler from the opposite side.
The factory actually marks the lines (Always double check). The red/pink line is coming from the trans.(Hot) and feeds into the radiator. The blue line is coming out of the radiator (Cooler) and will go into the B&M aux. cooler. The lines in this picture are located on the passenger side of the radiator near the top just under the over flow. Both of the lines feed into the bottom of the radiator.
The two lines pictured here are located on the passenger side of the engine block on the bottom. The red stuff is just some red paint I used to mark the line (Hot Line from Trans.) The line located just above is the return line to the trans. this line is coming from the aux. cooler.

Mike, It looks sweet!
I'm looking forward to a road report. Any change in mileage, general engine temps, change to A/C efficiency, towing report, etc.

I lost a very small amount of fluid, I was able to catch most of it in a small pile of paper towels. I don`t expect any big changes in anything, the trans. temps will probably be 15-25deg. cooler. That does not sound like much, but when you are towing that makes a big difference. Heat and RPM`s are what kill auto transmissions, from what I hear the trans. in the new 4Runner is a stout piece. At least I will have some piece of mind when towing my pop-up in the mountains.
I will leave off the skid plate and all of the covers for a few days so that I can check for leaks, I had to do an oil change anyway so it was a good time to do it.
I wish I had a trans. temp gauge to see the difference and keep tabs on the temps., I don`t understand why a company outfits a truck for towing and does not add an aux. trans. cooler and gauge.

How much extra fluid did you need to add for the cooler?

None. The coolers holding capacity is small, when I checked the trans. level there was no change at all. A cooler is cheap insurance against trans. damage and long term longevity. I have the same cooler on my Z-28 which has a built 4L60E with a 3800 stall/convertor and it runs below 180deg. all of the time.

Nice Install!
I would like to air a word of caution on the lines. The markings (pink and blue) are done at the factory for quality checking only, and not necessarily marking the In and Out lines.
Meaning, that someone else's 4Runner may have the same markings, or they may not. They may have a completely different color marking depending on what paint pen was used that day. At least this is how it is done in the US Factories.

I agree 100%, I checked the lines before doing the install. I drove the truck to operating temps. and checked the two lines for heat, the hotter line was coming from the trans, and the cooler line was coming from the radiator cooler going back to the trans.
This is really easy to check and must be done right. Good catch on the markings, mine were matched up to the markings. Always double check!!

Tranny cooler install
I installed a tranny cooler and gauge last night. I will post pics later today.
I put the temperature manifold on the "Out" of the tranny to measure the hottest temp of the fluid. B&M says to measure the temp going back into the tranny from the cooler, but I didn't see the benefit of that., as it is telling me the coldest the temperature gets
I installed the temp manifold right where Mike has marked the line out of the tranny with red paint. When I cut the line, I lost about 1/2 of quart of fluid. i couldn't figure out how to get fluid back in (i know where the hole is, but didn't have a pump). So i took it to a mechanic by my house and asked them to fill it up. Combined with the addition of the cooler, they added about a quart.
I feel much better knowing what my tranny temps are now. It does bother me that a "truck" would not have a tranny temp gauge built in. They come standard on full-size chevys and fords.

CAPilot, I am sure everyone would love to see the pics, and where you put the gauge and stuff.
My T4R has an "AT Temp" idiot light, which is more than any previous vehicle I owned had (well, many were standard transmissions ;) ). I am sure AT Temp is also available on the CAN bus that you can plug into, so one of the CAN-compatible displays could potentially show this.
Either way, a cooler is cheap insurance, I agree.

Sorry, I can't help but think less of you when you won't take the time to spell things right or use proper grammar. Deal with it. I don't care if you're ESL either, because I am too.

tranny cooler mount
Here is where I mounted the gauge. Everything else is EXACTLY as Mike G mounted his.
The temp sensor is mounted where mike "painted" his hot line coming out of his tranny.
BTW - my tranny temps are 160-165 in town and 140-148 on the freeway.
Also, the line is 10MM. So if you go with the temp manifold gauge, go to the autoparts store and get the 10mm line fitting - $1.99 and replace the fittings that come with teh manifold (either 5/16 or 3/8

Good to see everything turned out on your install, it`s also good to see the trans. temps you recorded. When I get the chance I will get my gauge in, but I`m in the process of getting my kitchen remodel finished.
Were you towing your boat when you recorded those temps.? I would be curious what the trans. temps. get to when you are towing your boat in the heat.
