I think you might be slightly crazy, like everyone else. The reason for after market racks is to be able to utilize the roof more efficiently for carrying gear and additional weight capacity. Now if you do not plan to use it for one of the above, it is pretty expensive to get just for looks.
If you think about
:
GOBI
$1299 for GOBI + ladder
load limit is 300lbs,
full length of vehicle
3in tall + 2in tall mounting brackets
Has side rails for securing loads, mounting accessories & fits Thule and Yakima accessories.
Baja standard basket, $650
weight capacity is 300lbs
half length of vehicle
5in tall + additional height of brackets
Has side rails for securing loads and mounting accessories.
You can most likely add the GOBI ladder, since it will attach to the vehicle and not the rack itself for $219
Baja full length rack, $950 I think I read on here
Capacity is 300lbs I assume
full length of vehicle
Does not have side rails for mounting accessories and securing loads
You can most likely add the GOBI ladder, since it will attach to the vehicle and not the rack itself for $219
So lets say you want to use factory crossbars and a basket
$100 for factory cross bars, capacity is 130lb I think (off the top of my head),
$350 for a yakima mega warrior
Does not fit aftermarket accessories without additional purchases
You spent $450 for a rack with less storage and lower weight capacity. But you can easily remove it if you want
You can most likely add the GOBI ladder, since it will attach to the vehicle and not the rack itself for $219
Aftermarket crossbars + basket$230 for rail grabbers and cross bars, yakima capacity is 150lbs
$350 for a yakima mega warrior
Fits additional accessories without additional purchase
You spent $580 for some additional (minimal) weight capacity over factory, but you still have less storage than a full time rack and less weight capacity. But you can easily remove the basket if you want.
You can most likely add the GOBI ladder, since it will attach to the vehicle and not the rack itself for $219
So you want a full length roof rack
Then if you are convinced you want a full length roof rack it comes down to GOBI ($1299 w/ ladder) v Baja ($950 + $219 for GOBI ladder = $1169). So for $130 dollar difference, you have 2 main items to consider:
Side rails (GOBI) or no side rails (Baja)
Made in USA (GOBI) or made in Mexico (Baja)
