I have to agree with the others, you have now opened a can of worms here. Keep us posted on this because it is most definately a warranty issue. Never heard of any Toyota (especially new) having such mechanical issues...

The point from the original Op's perspective was to gauge realistic expectations on a coming purchase. Why you , personally, may see no point I can see the value in someone who's researching a specific vehicle. You really opened a can of worms there, not to mention that these forums are indexed so your comment may be taken as "truth" by those who don't read every part of the thread. That being said, I'm glad there's nothing actually wrong because in my 4runner experience, I've never had any issues like you described.

This is the last place I'd solicit advice about a 4R as well. I just got rid of my 04 Dakota. If I went to their forum asking the same question, I'm sure they would have said positive things - how they're great, powerful, have a bad reputation that is unfounded, blah, blah, blah. Forums are biased. Now that I have a 4R, I love this forum. I also love that I sold my piece of junk Dakota.

Perhaps the better question(s) would be, what do you like about your 4R? and what do you wish was better? We can all answer those two questions.

Btw, I just bought an '11 4R, SR5 with the Upgrade package. I bought it for the name, looks, 4wd capabilities, resale value, reliability, and my wife said I looked good in it. I also liked that it was on a truck frame, and not a car.
I wish my 4R could sometimes transform itself into a Tacoma, then back into a 4R.

There are probably better options out there if you are looking for a commuter, but if you want to excite both sides of your brain, then the 4R is tough to beat.

Good luck in your search!

I have to admit the part about trading the Runner in for a Pilot got me. That's just fingers on a chalkboard to me.

....not sure if consumer reports is unbiased. But there's a whole thread on that already.

Oh crap! Maybe that's what's wrong with my 4R... Don't buy the diesel guys!
I would hope that the op has already researched other rating and review sites. If he did he probably found the same info that he is finding here. Call me a fanboy if you like, but if there was a better midsize SUV available for the same price,............. I'd own it.

Obviously none of the car makers are perfect and many of us have had better luck with one compared to others. I tend to keep cars for at least 7 years - Toyota has been the most reliable so far compared to cars I have owned from VW, Ford, Honda and Nissan. The Ford and VW I owned did not make it past year 3 before running into major problems - I would have a hard time ever buying another car from either company again. The Ford needed a new engine at 37k miles...

If your 4R is stalling out every few hours, you have to take it back to dealer to see what the problem is -- if they will not take care it, escalate the issue within Toyota and if need be, leverage the Lemon laws the most states have in place. It could be an easy fix or you might end up with a replacement.

I don't bother anymore when they have single digit posts, not to mention just one.

The mileage king speaks!

I'm the self proclaimed Mileage King on the forum. 47,000 miles and counting on my 2010 TE 4R (purchased Feb. 2010) and not a single issue. No creaks, no rattles, and most important no mechanical or electrical issues.
