Question An inquiry about the quality and reliability of the Toyota 4Runner

Dear members,

I consider the purchase of a 2011 new Toyota 4Runner.
Would be thankful for your insight in the vehicle's quality and reliability, based on your experience, even if with a previous model years.

Thank you for your time and sharing of your experience.

1) The 5th gen is basically a heavy refresh of the 4th gen, which is one of the most reliable vehicles on the road.
2) Truedelta shows a very, very low defect rate for the 5th gen 4Runner.
3) Interior and exterior part fit is really good. The plastics used for the glovebox area could be better, but overall, I think it will be quite durable. Dials and knobs actuate smoothly.
4) 15k miles and not a single issue. I definitely expect it to be super reliable.

I owned a 3rd generation for 11 years and have to say it was the best vehicle I owned, I only sold it because I was ready for a new one, so I got a 5th generation. I didn't even consider any other make/model. I also have to say that resale value is very good, so that should speak for itself....

I am in the same boat as you. Had my 2001 for 10 years, 115k miles, sold it for 7500.00. That is an amazing resale value for a rock solid vehicle that I had 0 issues with for the entire time I owned the vehicle.
I do expect the same reliability from my 5th gen. I am a T4R lifer (unless they make it look like the 4th gen again...then I will wait for the next one)

I bought a new 99' Jeep Grand Cherokee and had so many reliability issues that I traded it a year later for a used silver 99' T4R Limited. I took the 99' to 150,000 miles with not one issue. That truck was rock solid. I traded it for a new 08' SE V6, I wasn't really planning on trading but my dealer made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I put 35K on the 08' with no issues, but I never did like the styling of the 4th gens. When the 5th gen came out I knew I had to have one so I traded the 08' for a silver 11' Limited. I use my trucks for hunting and off road use and they can take a beating.

my dad's 3rd generation 4runner lasted 10+ years and over 220,000 miles with no major issues.

i just bought a 2011 last week, and am almost upset that i paid for the 7 year warranty...i am certain nothing will go wrong.

Please keep in mind that the 4Runner is built in Japan at one of the greatest auto plants in the world. It is an award winning plant known for absolute perfection in assembly. The 4Runner is built like a tank - it will go anywhere! I don't know of a more durable and reliable vehicle being built today.

I've owned a 2nd gen and two 3rd gens and taken them all over 100K miles without any major issues. My brother has a 4th gen with over 200K on it. The quality of this vehicle is really unmatched.

My dad just traded in his '04 limited with 107k miles. It still looked new and never had any issues.....not even a rattle. With a baby on the way, I knew the 4runner was the vehicle for me. I traded my '05 tacoma in on a new 4r. The Tacoma was also flawless after 102k miles. You just can't beat Toyota trucks.

So far have a little over 75k miles on my '08. The only glitch was with the stock radio display. It has traveled across the US more than once and has seen temperatures from -35 to 117 and not one issue. Its easy to maintain yourself. It feels as solid now as the day I bought it. I would buy another one in a heartbeat.

I have always owned Toyota vehicles most being trucks and overall they were very reliable. In 2005 I purchased my first 4R and it was the absolute best vehicle I have ever owned, not a single warranty or repair issue ever, when the 5th gen came out I traded it in because it held it's resale value so well that I was able to put a large portion down on a new one.

with everyone above!

I'm now on my 5th 4runner, not due to failure, but simply because I like to update the styling every few years. I've owned 2 3rd gens (a 97 limited, and a 2001 SR5 Sport), 2 4th Gens (2005, SR5 - was totalled by a driver who felt a stop sign was optional) and a 2006 SR5. I'm now on my 2010 Limited, and every 4runner I've ever owned has always been extremely reliable. I would jump in it and drive accross the country without a second thought. I've been a Toyota buyer for 14 years now and I will continue to buy Toyota for the quality and standards all thier vehicles display. As others have mentioned, 4Runner is built in Japan, at the Tahara plant, one of the most recognized, award winning, and distinquished plant's in the world. This plant also produces Lexus vehicles, so you know thier standards are extremely high. Once you buy one, you will not go back to anything else.

You will NOT be disappointed in the reliability of this vehicle.

Your hardest decision shouldn't be if you should buy a 4runner, rather, which trim level you should buy. (SR5 / Trail / Limited)

Now stop reading these posts and get out and get your own so we can welcome you to the forum!

You are the first person I have heard of having a real functional problem that wasn't related to the front diff.

Surprising to hear that. Could you share more on this? Did you try dealership to isolate the problem to fix it and what is the outcome?

I own 98 4R limited with 110K on it. It only had one fix on rear wheel axle grease leaking. I am still keeping it.
Now I own a 2011 TE. Hope I will have the same quality. However, now I noticed some strange noise coming from Drive chain that get me worried. I will see.

Don't leave us hanging, this is a serious issue on a vehicle that is still under warranty and it needs to be addressed. Your dealer needs to get to the bottom of this problem. Let us know what they find.
