Factory Auto Start or After-market?
Hey guys,
Any opinions, issues or suggestions with the factory auto start vs something else. I notice that many of the other autostart's also have the security alarm (viper, etc). It gets cold as a witch's titty up here sometimes. I pity the cold!

Factory option works for 10-minute periods, up to three times in a row, shuts off when you unlock the door, and requires line of sight. I don't about other options, I'm fine with the Toyota version.

I had the factory unit installed on my 11LTD. The dealership installed an aftermarket unit on my wife's 10Camry and we had problems with it, the alarm would constantly go off for no apparent reason. The last straw was when it went off in a funeral procession for my deceased uncle who was a highly decorated U.S. Marine that fought in WWII. I took it back the next day and made them change it to the factory unit, no problems since.

I'm not really sure, but it is an anti-theft type security system, the same as my wife's Camry XLE. If it thinks the vehicle is being stolen the alarm sounds. The aftermarket unit that they installed wouldn't communicate with the factory security system and thus wouldn't deactivate when the remote start was used, and would sound the alarm at random times.

Factory remote start was installed on my 11 Trail addition and it works perfect. I would have the dealer install it as well.

The following is my dealers response:
. The Limited pkg does list an anti-theft system, and a remote starter is available for $487.59 + tax. Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you. All the best,
That's Canadian. He also spoke with Toyota and they stated that the 2011 ltd's have a very basic security alarm, and glass breakage is not available. I know if someone really wants in they will get in. I'm sort of torn with regards to an after market alarm system. I've ordered my 9980 DNX Kenwood and the AV7500 Rosens for the headrests.
The dealer told me that the runner was in the production phase and will soon receive a serial number, then it will take 3 weeks to get from Japan to my dealer, port to port. I hope that means I will get it sooner rather than later

I've had aftermarket command starts put in sevral late model vehicles without issue. I find it's annoying that the factory system shuts off when you open the door.

SAY WHA?? When you open the door??!! So you have to start it twice if you use it before you drive? Thats WAY worse than forgetting to turn the key to IGN before pressing down on the brake and it shutting off!

Sorry for reviving this thread. Just a few questions regarding autostart. I have a 2010Ltd, will adding this OEM through the dealership after purchase be just the same as if it had come out of the factory with it? I'm sure it will use my current smartkey fobs? And is there any way around having to turn off when you get in and having to restart the truck again?

I'm not sure if does come from the factory with it. During my days in that field, none of them did. They were all installed at the port/dealer. They just got plugged into existing plugs in the truck. I'd highly recommend aftermarket.
Viper is a solid choice, I wouldn't hesitate buying another CompuStar.

This is something that I have been thinking about. If you get it from the dealer, do you get a whole new key, or do you have another remote? If you get the aftermarket version does the key remote still work?

The Toyota remote-start is built into the existing key-fob. It's quite nice to only need to carry around one key-fob, especially for those of us who carry nothing except the one car key around (I despite key chains and other keys on a loop with the car key).
