Limited front end fascia

Can someone tell me of what use is the black plastic fascia hanging just underneath the painted portion on the bottom of the front end of the limited? Any useful purpose? Has anyone tried to remove it? It would seem that the 2-3 inches of black plastic would change the approach angle by several degrees (is this the item that makes the difference in approach angle between the TE and LTD?). I assume it's also on the SR5. Thanks in advance.

They are vents to direct airflow towards the brakes.

Several people have removed it. I know Antman has. I'd search the forum for "front air dam" or something like that, and see if you can find the mod thread.
