Folding Seats

Seats that fold under and completely disappear. 5th Gen seat bottoms fold forward and a standard air bag will not fit unless seat bottoms are removed. While removal is not difficult, while camping, I have to either have only one passenger or expose the seat bottoms to the elements at the camp site.

As someone that has never owned a 4Runner - but has fallen in love with the looks for the 5th gen...

I am realistic in understanding I will likely never do any aggressive off-road driving. To date there has never been a time when I needed more than my Subie or Honda Pilot could provide.

So in a perfect world I'd have the look of the 4Runner in a lighter weight package with a turbo 4 cylinder that gets low 20's city and high 20's highway. Look at the Subaru Ascent, curb weight close to the 4Runner, 4 turbo makes numbers very close to the 4Runner -but better gas mileage.

I want something aggressive, blocky, chunky, but with decent gas mileage and higher level safety features. I realize that will never happen for any manufacturer, but a person can dream.

Clever....the way your wrote that, it almost seemed like you were serious there for a minute, lol. But yeah, if Toyota ever does that....they will be dead to me.

Considering Toyota is one of the least biggest risk takers, I doubt it. It makes no financial sense with the Highlander. Toyota doesn't like to waste money, and they know they hit the jackpot by facelifting the ugly out of the 5th gen in 2014.

There's not much to improve upon, and I think most of the obvious changes they would make (going to 3.5 L v6, all aluminum body) would be for the worse.

V8 option, first and foremost. V6 is great, but some of us want more, especially for towing boats and trailers. Locking diffs, front and rear! Higher stock suspension that allows larger tires out of the gate, or an electronic adjustable suspension like the Lexus GX470. More protection in the form of skid plates and solid bumpers. A nice STURDY stock roof rack that isn't curved and will hold a roof top tent or retractable awning without a fuss. The FJ cruiser and Nissan Xterra came with nice stock roof racks, why cant we get something like that on a 4Runner, even if it's just an option.

If people want a luxury SUV meant for strictly highway driving and commuting, there are options out there, and a Limited 4runner can provide that. But most of us buy 4runners because we want a SOLID, and dependable 4WD body on frame vehicle that will take us anywhere with the upmost confidence and leave a grin on our face. I know Toyota can provide that if they really wanna get serious.

That being said, having all of these options out the gate would be great, but the aftermarket will continue to thrive on Toyota's "shortcomings", and many of us take pride and enjoy building up our trucks and making them unique. So either way, I'll be happy. Some more offroad oriented options would be nice, but at the end of the day I'm going to mod it out anyway and make the vehicle as off-road worth as my budget will allow

Only thing I would like is a luxery interior package for the SR5. Real wood trim, lexus-level seats with air conditioning. Something that offers the interior features of the GX.

2021 Toyota 4Runner Confirmed To Arrive Next Year - SUV Project
"Two New Engines
The attractive 2021 Toyota 4Runner SUV will get updates under the hood. According to the latest news, the new model will get some new engines. The current mid-size SUV comes with a strong 4.0-liter V6 engine that delivers 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. The towing capacity of this SUV is 5,000 pounds. Furthermore, this engine sends its power through RWD as the standard and AWD as the optional.

However, the new model may get a new 3.5-liter drivetrain, that is also used under the Toyota Tacoma truck. With this engine, the upcoming 4Runner will be able to make 278 HP and 265 lb-ft. However, another solution is a turbocharged 3.0 engine that is under the Supra sport model. This engine is capable to produce under the Supra 335 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque.
"

Yah right... Toyota is not putting this engine in the 6th gen.
