As someone who just traded in his 19 Tacoma with the 3.5L and 6SP tranny, avoid this new crap like the plague.

If this info turns out to be correct, I am really glad I bought a 2019 4 Runner.

The engine/tranny combo was horrible. Really noisy engine and the transmission never knew what gear it wanted to be in. For example, my friend's 2018 TRD OR almost never wants to shift into 6th at highway speeds. We would be going 75 mph and the truck was still in 5th. He'd have to switch over to sport mode and manually shift it up, then go back to drive. And this was before and after he had it flashed by the dealership. My other friend's 17, he has to hit the ECT button and drive it with that on if he wants to get somewhat normal shifting. He's taken it in multiple times, no fix.

Also tons of reports of engine fuel injectors failing, transmission failing. I am sure these are small number in comparison to how many Tacos are pushed out, but I would still personally steer away for now. I wish I'd done my research.

I also believe this combo leads to a lot of the vibration issues people were complaining about.

As where in the 4runners case, I think it all comes from either alignment and/or balance and tires, a lot of the Tacoma's vibration issues come from the driveline which is a ***** to diagnose.

With my truck I had the "rumble strip" vibration. Literally every single time I would slow down and come to a stop, my truck felt like it was going over those safety strips you see on the side of the road. I was able to duplicate this at the dealership many times, and even the foreman himself came out and agreed that was not normal.

Also go to tacomaworld forums and under the 3rd gen section, there is a list of TSBs that have come out since 2016 on the new Tacos. Take a look at that list. It's massive.

Mine also had excessive wind noise, felt like my window was cracked open every time I was driving on the highway. Was embarrassing having friends/family in my truck with me.

They were never able to get it fixed, and I finally got tired and traded it in for the 4runner.

Last thing I read about two weeks ago was that Toyota is going to combine the 4Runner, Tundra and Tacoma onto a similar platform. Of course the vehicle will all be different but have similar frames and some parts inter-changability. Which makes sense to maximize profit. First the Tundra, then the Taco and finally the 6th Gen Runner in 2023. Which also kind of makes sense because they are still selling over 100,000 runners a year in it's current form.

But I have no first hand solid inside information to back any of this up. So....

that's nothing new, Taco's and 4Runners have always had some part compatibility since the beginning. They just have different part numbers is the only difference. For Toyoda's sake I really hope they keep the body on frame design. 4Runner is one of the last one's to still have this. Everyone else went to unibody like a crying baby

There's no reason to go unibody on the 4runner. They'll kill it off before they do that. The Highlander fills that niche for them.

IMO, the 2022 or 2023 may look like a large current RAV4 platform. Here in TN, 4Runners sell very well, hard to find nice used ones. I am on my 6th 4Runner since 2008, can't beat them, especially trade value. My current 2018-SR5-4WD.
If the new design gets rid of the ladder frame, never trade.

I cannot make a decision between 4Runner and Highlander. What do you think about this? Which one to choose?
I've had an '07 Matrix since new, has 225K on it and NO problems. Original clutch and it will still start in 2nd gear, no problem. I have an '07 Highlander and '03 4Runner as well. Two different vehicles. If you like modifying your vehicle then 4Runner has many aftermarket parts, Highlander hardly any. If you plan to off road, then 4runner is your choice. I would say 4Runner is more maintenance intensive than Highlander but I like messing with them anyway. If I bought a new HL, or low mileage used, FIRST thing I would do is remove and lube the alignment adjusting cams both front and REAR or they will seize from rust. Same true on 4Runner, just on front though. Both nice vehicles, just different target market.
