Possibly. Biggest January. Lets see if it holds. I know my dad just ordered his second 5th Gen (I'm on my third 5th Gen). Perhaps there are many others like us.

It certainly is a counterpoint to the folks suggesting Toyota is leaving a lot of money on the table by not updating the 4runner. The way it looks to me, they are printing money. Change nothing in over a decade, add tech from other cars to refresh for pennies, and keep charging more and more and its been working for 10 years. I agree with what others are saying as it sure would be nice to see some more modern touches. From Toyota’s view, they’d be losing money by redesigning as they are still reaching their near peak potential market with a vehicle thats a decade old, cheaper to make by the year, and still flying off the lots.

I had a choice of another 4Runner (would be my 3rd 4th gen) or trying something different.
Decided to try something different, but staying in the Toyota family (Highlander Hybrid). I’m looking forward to the 6th gen and will probably be back in a 4Runner in a few years — assuming Toyota doesn’t mess it up.
Looking at the sales numbers and it’s pretty astounding for a vehicle introduced in 2010.

How are you liking the Highlander Hybrid after so many years in 4Runners?

This is literally what I say to people who say that Toyota NEEDS to update the 4Runner. There is no incentive for Toyota to change the 4Runner as long as there are people like me who have/will buy the current generation. What will push their hands is the EPA and Emissions standards (and anything else that promotes "green" driving). For ever person here complaining about the 4Runner, there are that much more people heading to the dealership purchasing the latest MY 4Runner.

It’s a great truck no doubt about it, but Toyota really needs a full redesign and needs to absolutely hit it out of the ballpark. Too many competitors coming out with 4Runner killers (Ford Bronco, LR Defender, etc.) The new 4Runner doesn’t have to have a V8 necessarily, but it does need more hp and torque along with better gas mileage. A 48V mild hybrid electrical system would certainly do the trick. A 2 door version with a 6 speed manual transmission would also be on my wishlist, but might be a bridge too far.

Yes, but 2022 is what most of us have been saying for over a year.

More than likely it'll be a '23 model from what it seems like. Unfortunately it's probably pretty locked-down that it'll be an I4/Hybrid of some kind given Toyota's gun-ho attitude of locking down on everything being Hybrid going forward. Go ahead and thank all them lovely "the 4Runner needs to be modern" people I guess?
In any case, I'm curious how many refreshes will be delayed/pushed back because of COVID, we're experiencing a huge shortage of semi-conductor chips that affecting parts supply for repairs and new production vehicles (among every other use for semi-conductor chips globally), so the next gen for the 4Runner might be pushed back further than late '22.
