Hope that's not the case.
I suspect the tundra update planned for 2020 test mules came out for testing and sucked. So they pulled it back and had to go back to the design team for something better in terms of engine/transmission.

Toyota needs to swing for the fences this next generation. We all know they like to keep vehicles around 10+ years before a model change. It will be important for their next decade of vehicles to be successful. Honestly if they're anything short of a home run then I don't see myself buying a new Toyota. The Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco have hit all the marks that their fans and enthusiasts have wanted. I'd rather keep my 5th gen or move to a used 200 series than get a neutered 6th gen if it comes to that.
I priced out a Ford Bronco Badlands model with Sasquatch package and it came right to $50k. Not bad if you ask me since I've spent that much and more on my 4Runner and mods. Combine with dealer incentives and that you can get great deals on Domestic vehicles then I could see that dropping into low to mid $40k after a few years. An out of the box off-road beast that literally requires zero mods that would basically sh*t on any TRD Pro. I hate to say it but Ford is doing fantastic things with their off-road division. From the Raptor, to Bronco, Tremor Super Duty's, and Ford Ranger. A 6th gen 4Runner anything short of a legitimate Bronco competitor or killer is a no go for me.

If the next one is ONLY Hybrid, im most def out on that one. I was seriously considering a new Bronco once the Warthog was revealed but now theres news the 2022 Mustang will get a 6.8L v8 in some way so I may just wait for that lol.
If it turns out to be true I'll keep my 4Runner till the wheels fall off and get a new Mustang....its been almost 6 years since I've had one.

Why would they have pictures of a 6th gen when the 2021's just came out?

Curious what will happen to new BOF SUV and engine development now that Ketchup Boy is the new Climate Czar and GM just dropped out of the lawsuit against California.
Toyota seemed to be stalling development, but they still seem insistent on suing Cali for our kooky emissions standards.

I trudged through this whiney thread and I hope the Toyota engineers and execs have a more positive outlook than this group!

I hope they're looking at the Bronco and 392 Hemi Wrangler for inspiration.

I'm very interested to see if/what will come out in '22. I bought my 5th in Nov of '09 and have been debating on replacing it. I almost pulled the trigger at the end of last year but I was extremely hard to spend that much money for an infotainment center and a different gauge cluster. Yes, there are a few other minor changes here and there but basically they have not made enough changes/improvement to make me want to upgrade...although the '21's did make the most tempting jumps.
We have plenty of time to guess and speculate without a doubt. I am holding onto this one until a new Gen is released.

I'd say update the internals and work on better crash tests, updated interior and such but keep the 4Runner looking very similar to what it looks like now. Also eventually they'll have to do some sort of update to the powertrain since the V6 with the 5 speed transmission is getting old.
BMWs, Ford F-150s, Chevy Silverado's, etc...have had the same basic looks forever, so 4Runners can too.

I have a feeling there may be a hybrid model come out in 2023. Just glad they got rid of the ugly infotainment that they had since the 2000's.
That said, I am not a fan if they came out with a hybrid model. I genuinely wish there was a fully electric model since the markets are shifting. Toyota is just very slow at changing. with the 2035 California law being signed, I hope there is a fully electric version in the next ten years that way Toyota can grab some of the market share in the suv segment.
GM already has an all electric hummer, so i hope other companies start rolling out electric versions later. It would solve 4runners dreaded mileage problem and be a win win.
And if people complain about range anxiety on electric cars , please. Most people arent going 300 miles a day and charge at home anyways. The world is going to shift to electric in the next 15 years so this will be the last gas version 4runner Toyota will make when it is released in the next few years.

I am in the market right now and just cannot fully commit to a new 2021 4Runner. Ive had my 4th Gen since it was new in 2005 and with the ancient Trans and Engine they are still using it makes it hard to justify buying another when there are so many more capable transmission and engine combos.
Ya I get that its been working all these years but its showing its age. The body design of the 4runner is looking long in the tooth also. To me they need to look at what was done with the Bronco and possibly style the new 4runner similar to the fj's or old school land cruisers but with a more modern feel. That would be a winner if you coupled it with a new trans and engine. Make it a truly stock capable off-roader built to last 300K miles. THEN they will smoke the Bronco and take a huge dent out of Jeep sales.

As long as they don't make it look like a Jeep or the Jeep's new cousin (aka the new Bronco).

I really appreciate the simplicity of the 4Runner, just purchased a 2020 TRDP for the wife (aka Me) for a price I can live with.
She only drive local, and I drive a Tesla for commuting but need a vehicle for trips and off-roading.
The mods are endless for these vehicle, and with basic maintenance will reward you with a great ownership experience.
Besides Dodge, most automakers are going less displacement with turbo's.
The fact that 4Runners are basically the last true 4x4 truck based SUV you can buy, those damn salespeople may be right. They told me these would be collectors items. (Ha Ha Ha)
Seriously, I dig the vibe, the community and love how raw these trucks are. I'm all in!!
