From thedrive.com:
  • An all-new Tundra pickup will drop in the fourth quarter of 2021 and sit on a TNGA-F platform, forming the basis for new 4Runners and Sequoias due in 2022. None of these trucks will be available with a V-8. Instead, a twin-turbo hybrid V-6 will be the top engine option
  • New Tacoma is coming in 2024
  • Lexus will no longer offer any V-8 engines for less than $90,000. It will, however, sell you one in the twin-turbo V-8 LC F slated for 2022

I'm always hesitant about buying a vehicle during an all-new model year. My fear is that there will be some quirk that did not get caught during design and has to be addressed in the following model years. Maybe Toyota has a better track record with this.

Thumbs up No problems

I bought a 2010, 1st year 5th Gen. 4Runner and I am overjoyed with it. I have 170,000 on it and never had any issues other than the Navigation system going out on me but it was fully covered as it was within my warranty time period. I do think Toyota should have a locking Gas door on them though.

Look up Tacoma frame rust, engine sludging, T/O bearing on the Tacoma AND FJ Cruiser.

Wow! I had no knowledge of the frame rust issues on some of the older Tacoma's. This is one of the things I was referring to when hesitant to all-new model years. Sure it may be great for new tech. However, I would prefer to wait a few years to see if there are any issues and see how they are addressed with the manufacture.

Great reference, thanks bud!

Has anyone entertained the idea or possibility that a PRIME edition could be in the works? It wouldn't surprise me in the least if indeed a hybrid version seems to be in the cards (I'm fine with that). The soon to be released (if not already) PRIME RAV4 just makes my mouth water............. nevermind the long term ownership costs/maintenance (replacement battery, tranny, etc etc).

304 HP in a RAV4. Nice.

I would be all over a regular 4Runner Hybrid with power north of 350 HP, maybe not a PHEV though... I guess it depends on how long the battery can hold up after multiple days of being away from a wall charger.

A prime 4runner with a performance based engine would be amazing, and would entice me to trade in my 2020.

Call me paranoid, but the Corona virus stuff has me rethinking 100% electric cars, in the event that power grid ever goes out. I love the idea of a performance hybrid tho.

What I keep hearing about is that the new 4Runner might be a Unibody and not a Body On Frame like we have now.
IMO people make a huge deal on the whole body on frame thing, but honestly it isn't nessacery to have that and still get all the off-road chops people desire. BOF is important for trucks, with beds that require big payloads, not as important for an SUV. I for one am fine is they go to unibody, and I know this is an unpopular opinion, but would maybe prefer it.

Until it lifts two wheels into the air and the windshield cracks when it goes over a rock the size of a soccer ball.

Jeep Grand Cherokee has a unibody, and the Trailhawk version is a legit offroader. I think the situation you outlined is so rare and unlikely to ever happen.

Of course the Jeep Grand Cherokee may not make it thru the trail course, but only due to it breaking down on account of it just being a Chrysler product. Major transmission issues are common on the Jeep Grand Cherokee

All the Land Rovers and IRS Jeep products lift their wheels on even the most gentle trails because of the independent suspension in all of the corners and have a bunch of electronic doo-dads to counteract this because a unit body or hybrid frame tends to be better on road where they are used 99% of the time. It makes you think you're doing heroic shit when you're just riding over bumps.
