It's Coming
Last model year is coming...next year of N280. Right now? All final TMC commitments are likely being made in design department and whatnot for '23.
Past 4Runner programs didn't have very high lead times, so right now is probably the time to informally shout from the rooftops, what you want stylistically for MY23.
By December, it is 100% no more core next gen design work (per the work I do, usually it's 2 years to release).
I'm waiting on a response from "someone" as well on a question I asked, per a PM in January.
Side note:
This forum section is stupid, when nothing N280 is 6th generation. Especially 2019 models. Either the administration here fix it or it might blemish their credibility.

what would you like to look in a 6th gen?
v8 would be excellent, perhaps an 8 pace tranny, manual could be cool, idk. i do no longer need that anemic 3.five atkinson that they're putting in the tacos proper now. test drove one and it felt sad, however the truck itself drove brilliant. engine and tranny felt weak tho. c'mon toyota, give us lower back the v8!

I really hope we don't get the 3.5. That engine is anemic. If we do, keep the price down, and offer the Lexus turbo 6 in everything that's remotely offroad capable. Would love to see an updated 5.7 to bring it up to spec with the American V8's, but I think that's a tall ask.

well when the old 4.0L tacoma v6 was the same engine as the 4runner, they were tuned completely different from each other.
i imagine they will do the same for the 3.5L

I got my response today, finally. The full-scale clay buck that was described to me in January, was indeed the next 4Runner. Guy in question, is a friend based in both Michigan and California and is a clay modeller.
He was working on a midsize clay, which I assumed was something else. It was a competing proposal for the next 4Runner, which the overall design competition winner has already been approved by Akio Toyoda himself.
Asked if Calty or the designer he was collaborating with won, but he didn't answer that question and claimed it's not to be disclosed to me for now. So nevermind what I said earlier, design work is done. Some of you might be getting surveys or maybe answered some already? Maybe upcoming consumer marketing clinic to review?
All I will say, as anything in detail would probably be borderline espionage and prompt unwanted attention like these photos you guys are posting here.
Toyota USA is not happy about those images of the timeline map, from the little I hear. No one publicly got to see beyond 2022 thankfully, which lists the Tacoma, Camry, and other vehicles.

Thanks carmaker for your insight! Any rumors on possible powertrains on the next 4Runner?

Certainly.
Not certain about the 4Runner, unlike Tundra. Anyone in Toyota engineering considers telling me that degree of information, to be borderline espionage for some reason.
Hybrid V6 power is already being applied for larger vehicles, as well as a new turbo 4 cylinder is being developed.
I am wondering if a naturally-aspirated 6-cylinder mated to a hybrid powertrain is a still part of the Dynamic Force engine family plans? I'd believe that turbo 4 replaces the GR. Again, can't be certain if even that's 2.4 or 2.5L.

Thank you! I’ve also heard the same..... 3.5L v6 turbo (LS Motor) with hybrid for top tier tundra motor, maybe without hybrid for the volume models. And yes, I believe a 2.4 or 2.5L turbo will be the new GR replacement going into many of the upcoming Toyota and Lexus models....4Runner, Tacoma, Lexus IS, RC, etc.
Can’t wait to learn more!

Turbo 4. 4R is going full circle with it. It would pretty pretty awesome if you could get a rating of 300hp/300ftlbs.
The sales on this vehicle are pretty amazing now. This market share is Toyota’s to loose.

A heated steering wheel would be nice for us here in Canada! A plug in Hybrid "prime" version like the upcoming Rav4 would be interesting as well, with 250-300 hp at the wheels.
I would also like to see the same design language as the Rav4, if it looks similar to the Highlander than that would most likely be a deal breaker for me. And please please please don't do a collaboration with BMW or something, lol.

Was at the Toronto Auto Show. Toyota Canada Reps says frame stays the same. New hybrid option will become available.

Frame moves to the TNGA-F platform from what I’ve read?? Hybrid option sounds feasible being rumors are the tundra and land cruiser will offer this as well .
