I suspect a 6th gen 4Runner will get the drivetrain from the current Tacoma.
Which is why I bought a new 5th gen recently.

If it’s still over two years out (MY 2023), I highly doubt it would get the current Tacoma drivetrain. At that point the taco will be up for a refresh and I recall reading an article from the lead Toyota truck engineer that new power trains are coming. My opinion, the current taco drivetrain was a stop gap while the next gen stuff was in development. It basically just helped mpg’s. I’m guessing a 2.5L 4cyl turbo with 8 speed transmission. Would make a great base motor for the upcoming tundra as well. Likely 300+ hp & TQ.

Unlikely to be 2021. Fall 2021 is when the Tundra will be introduced as a 2022 model. 6th gen 4R is likely Q4 2022 as a 2023 model.

Let's hope they redesign the GX also. Front end is horrible.

Yea the 6th gen 4 runner will be a hybrid probably with 4 cylinder turbo and get well over 33 mpg. The 2021 Tundra will get hybrid powertrain as well but will be a turbo 6 with hybrid powertrain. Toyota plays the long game hybrids are their direction for the future. Ford believes it can go full electric and hybrid but unlike Toyota or Tesla they have very little experience with either technology.

That would kill the T4R for me. The only question is, do I keep my 2013 or buy a 2021?

Buy a 2021 which will be the last of the best.
Everyone wants the same dependability but also wants a turbo and 8 speed tranny. Not sure you can have it both ways. Only way id want a turbo is with a diesel power plant. the 5th gen, like all other gens, is dependable so I hope it continues.
I'll keep my 4runner till the 7th gen comes out

One interesting part of this was the comment about the Landcruiser becoming a stripped out off roader... who the hell is going to afford that??

Garbage. I predict low mileage V8 4th gens will be selling at near original MSRP. The automotive industry the past 10 years has been a complete disgrace, now it will get much worse. Sick of the key fobs, push button starts and shifter dials, touchscreens and shitty GPS systems, the tiny motors, turbos, computers and engineered obsolescence, ALL OF IT.

Haha, I hear you, but not sure 95% of other people and their wallets will agree. Just the fact we are on an automobile related message board makes us a small group, and the fact its 4RUnner related is even more of a unique subculture.
In fact the last 10 years has seen massive innovation and safety advances. And one of the biggest complaints about these vehicles is the dismal MPG. I for one would welcome a decent truck with great mileage, and even consider an electric.
