6th gen 3.5L 4runner in 2022/ 2023?

I love the 5th gen... when i heard about the possible 3.5 L or even a hybrid engine, I went and got another 5th gen

Purchased my first 2020 on march 31st

purchased my second 2020 on May 10th.!!

Don't mean to sound like a snob or a troll...
But i love them!

If they make the Land Cruiser less luxo, more off road, and cheaper and make the Lexus LC more luxo I really don't give a damn what they do with the 4Runner.

Wait what's so bad if they introduce a hybrid? Wouldn't that make it even more horsepower + better city driving? Downside being...?

Only hippies drive hybrids!!!

(I'm looking forward to the torque of electric motors, but don't tell anybody).

The trend at Toyota has be down in power and moving to hybrids. So.. I think there's a very real chance that a 3.5 V6 is not going to happen because the only option will be a 4cyl with a hybrid. Similar to the new Sienna and Venza. They're traditionally vehicles that would share a similar drive train with the 4Runner in terms of engine size and power output. So the fact that the new LC300 is rumored to be 3.5 v6 hybrid only, leads me to now think that the next 4Runner is most likely going to a 4cyl.

I had thought it would be a turbo 4, but now I'm betting on a N/A 4cyl with a hybrid and around 250hp or less combined output. Could very well be that we will wish we could even get a 3.5v6.

250 HP is not going to be competitive for a vehicle this size. The Hybrid Highlander with those power ratings is already slower than Subaru Forester, plus I don't see how a CVT would last for real off-road duty.

I agree. But look at the new 2021 Venza. It's 219hp. And it'll probably weigh around 4300lbs. So it's going to be slow AF. The OLD toyota Venza had 268hp. Toyota can't have missed the fact that their new hybrids are going to be way under powered compared to industry standards. I think they'll still sell at least at some level.

Will people buy a 4Runner with only 250hp? I'm not sure. I certainly don't think it would be competitive when the Bronco will probably have a twin turbo v6 with 400hp.

The hybrid Highlander is gutless... test drove a Platinun last week. I don’t see how you put a 2.5L hybrid in a BOF vehicle expected to tow 5,000 pounds.

That would be the next crime, making the T4R a uni to reduce weight for the hybrid. Stick a sporty appearance pkg on it and most of the buying public wouldn't care because they think they would be saving the planet.

The Tacoma is already a NA 3.5l v6

The LC200 is rumored to have a turbo 3.5l v6

The 4Runner has to sit somewhere in between.. or share the Tacoma power train + a hybrid motor option for the top tier models

Curb weight. less power even with instant torque. Inability to fix certain things on the fly. Independently ran axles. (AWD-i sucks on all Toyota hybrids). There's a few things I can think of.

If it's a 2.5L Turbo - maybe. But a 2.5 N/A hybrid? It could still work if - and that's a huge *if* it has a 30kwh battery pack so it can deliver 250hp continuous output for long duration up big mountain passes.

The outlier in all of Toyota's new models is the RAV4 Prime. The larger battery pack means it can deliver a lot more amps. With 300+hp in that setup it might actually tow really well so long as you have enough juice to pull up the longest pass you'll see on your trip. I think the 3.5L v6 with the hybrid system and a combined 350-400hp would be great in the 4Runner. I'm getting less and less optimistic about it though.

If I could pay $5k more and get a hybrid add-on with 100hp added on top of the current 4Runner and another 5mpg across the board, I'd buy it without a second thought over a supercharger. If I had the option of a 2.5L NA with a hybrid or my old 4V6 - I'll be sticking with what I got. So I think at least for me - there's a good value proposition for a hybrid 4Runner if it's done right.

A 2.5L Turbo on it's own should be good for over 300 HP with near instant torque over 300 lb/ft. That would be perfectly fine.
