Sounds like the new Land Cruiser will be 100% off-road, cheaper, 5 seats, and will lose all the extra dumb luxury items like the refrigerated center console. So hopefully between the 4R or LC one of them will fit the bill.

No hybrid.

Hybrid will cost fortune to repair. It won't happen to BOF 4Runner.

Only speculation and rumors based on the same article with the "leaked" slideshow pictures from the dealer event.

I know that Toyota was supposed to make an announcement about the TLC this year, but not sure if it won't be delayed like every other vehicle launch.

I get toning down some of the luxury items to lower cost, but I actually really like the center console chill-box...

Where else am I supposed to keep my driver accessible Grey Poupon?

It's been my experience that it's pretty much mandatory to have a refrigerated console if you want to sell a luxury SUV in the Middle East. They don't drink (yeah right, sure, they don't) so its for soda, water etc.

Well I'm not operating a deli, so if some maniac wants some Dijon mustard they can wait for me to get it out of the cooler in the back.

My guess is that the new 4Runner gets the same 3.5l as the Tacoma, and a hybrid motor.....Land Cruiser probably become a cheaper off-roader.

i can see a hybrid for the limited models and higher since they are mostly regulated to city use.

the more off road versions i can see sticking to the 3.5L v6 but tweaked differently that the tacoma. just like they did for the 4.0L tacoma and 4.0L 4runner engine. if i remember correctly the 4R got the VVTI engine tweak and the tacoma engine didnt.

My guess is it will be a twin turbo V6 Derivative of the one that will be in the New LC. Kind of Like the Explorer has a derivative of the Expedition Ecoboost.

TLC doesn't really have to be one or the other. In most markets the range goes from poverty pack to luxury. You can currently buy a lc200 with the same 4.0l v6 as the 4R and the 5 speed AT or a 5 speed MT with cloth seats and a vinyl floor (incidentally it costs basically the same as a current 4R) and you can then option all the way up to the $100k LX570.

I don't see any reason the LC300 couldn't have a wide range of options. Or - even just two. Base and premium. Base model is turbo 6, 2 rows, basic interior, and offroad features. Premium upgrades the interior and adds a hybrid system.

My guess is Toyota is really just saying that they're going to bring the GX model to the North America market. I'd probably buy it over a 4Runner if it were available - so long as it didn't get 13mpg and weigh 6000+ lbs... that's the deal breaker for me. Has been since the LC200 came out. It has to get more fuel efficient - and I mean like twice as fuel efficient.

Put this on a show room floor for $45k and I'd bet it'll sell a LOT better than the current LC200

Also - just because it shows how little effort TOyota really puts into the 4Runner vs the LC - check out the ladder setup on the LC200. It's super slick. And OEM.

And dual batteries? - Yep. OEM.

Biggest downside to the base model VDJ200 is that it has the non-inter-cooled diesel. 182hp / 317ft/lb. That's a tough sell. But Toyota also sells a Prado 150 still with a 5-LE non-turbo diesel (it has 93hp). Can you imagine how slow a 4Runner would be with a 93hp engine. Dear god. And no it also doesn't have much torque - 146 ft lbs. I'm not sure it would outrun a golf cart. 0-60 would probably be 20 seconds. I'm legitimately not sure it could maintain highway speeds unloaded. So - maybe Toyota shouldn't go all the way to the bottom of the lineup.

Very interesting, thanks for all that info. A couple of observations about the photos.
- The rake on that would drive all the levelers on this forum crazy, it looks like a six inch difference.
- That minimal ladder. How is someone other than Spidermen supposed to use it? Left foot on bumper, right foot on tail light step, left foot on ?
Or is it right foot on tire, left foot on tail light step, right foot on munchkin two-step?
Anyway, I like it.

That's an interesting observation. I really have no idea. I haven't ever actually seen one in person. I think the idea is basically that you just step on the bar above the light and the upper part is mostly for a hand hold. The LC200 really isn't all that tall and equally important is that the roof isn't all that wide. Much like the 4Runner - for the most part you can reach everything from the ground anyway. So the paradox I see is that you probably need to be fairly tall to step up to the step bar, but at the same time a person who's fairly tall can just reach the top rack without the step. Especially if you have the ambulance doors so you can stand easily on the rear bumper or interior area.

I think it's similar in step up distance to something like this:

On vehicles like a sprinter van, or even a Suburban (I had one about 20 years ago) getting up to the top rack, you often would need to actually climb up on top. Not only due to height, but also because the reach is so far across the rack to get to stuff in the middle. In those cases a ladder is probably a necessity and really useful.
