I think Toyota understands that the 4runner heritage is valuable. In that respect, I doubt they'd ever go away from BOF engineering on it. There are loads of other options for unibodies, etc. like the Highlander. The 4runner is something different, and they have a heavy share of that market. I can't imagine they'd abandon it and leave it to the Tahoe/Yukon, etc.

As for power train, I bet it's the 3.5 out of the Taco with some tweaks. I think they realize the current platform is down on power and torque compared to it's competitors, so I'm betting they try to push numbers close to 325-340. Enough of a boost for people to take notice, but nothing crazy.

They'll throw a 7 speed or something in it to appease that crowd and try to increase efficiency well into 20s for combined economy. I expect they might finally throw us a bone with upgraded HID headlights, as well as other little luxuries like ventilated seats. I also expect it will get full TSS 2.0, or maybe even 3.0 by then.

Toyota has clearly hinted that hybrid is their future. The rav4 prime is really what the new 4 runner will look like. A bigger battery 4 cylinder motor more power and fuel economy. I'm sure unlike the rav 4 they will still retain a transfer case and 4 wd system but maybe not. The hybrid component will allow them to power each wheel independently depending upon the design. It could be the most capable 4wd without lockers. It will clearly be something that will allow them to jump ahead of their competitors in fuel economy performance and possibly offroad capability. The rav 4 prime will smoke your current 4 runner and get a ridiculous mpg doing it...lol YouTube

Prime is a PHEV, I seriously doubt we'd see that on BOF SUV. Prime also uses a CVT which is definitely a no-go - Subaru has big issues with their CVTs in offroad situations. I'm hopeful for the proposed Tundra/LC powertrain: 3.5L TT Conventional Hybrid.

The power plant won't be a 3.5 hybrid. Toyota used their 4 cylinder hybrid for lexus SUV within the 4 runner size. Even the highlander is a 4 cylinder hybrid. The transmission I agree will not be a cvt not for a 4wd line like 4 runner. Toyota will aim to meet all federal and European emission and fuel requirements for 2030 plus with this new platform and a 4 cylinder hybrid is something they have been doing for along time and doing it better than anyone. I'm sure we will see a new transmission and possibly a new transfer case design they have not developed for anything yet due to the nature of the 4 runner. A 320 hp 40 mpg 700 range 4 cylinder hybrid
plus 4 runner 6th gen is probably what we will see. It will all be about efficiency.

Well the comparable Lexus SUV is the GX, which still only has the V8. I don't think Toyota has dropped a 4-Cyl Hybrid in to any BOF vehicle yet. If they drop the Highlander setup in to the 4R, then RIP. 243 HP ... I'm not interested in getting passed by a Subaru Crosstreks while trying to climb grades around here.

If they give us a setup with over 300 HP and more torque... great.

You got to think like a billion dollar Japanese automaker. They like to change the 4 runner and Tundra line once every 6 to 7 years with necessary powertrain designs. The R n D cycle for that line is massive and when they release the new model they need to get it right because it will be out for years with few modifications. They aren't releasing a 243 hp highlander in the 4 runner not when the 4 runner is capable of carrying the same technology in the 302 hp rav 4 . Of course being their leading offroad platform they will have a new transmission and 4wd system mated to this 320+ hp 4 cylinder hybrid model. A transmission and 4 wd system we haven't seen in any of their vehicles yet but probably is still with the R N D team.

Toyota hasn't changed the powertrain in the Tundra since 2007. The 1GR-FE has been around since the 4th gen with a few modifcations. Whatever you want to call this gen Tundra it's really not that much different than the 2nd gen and is more like a gen 2.5. This cycle Tundra has lasted from 2007 - 2022 (likely). The 5th gen 4Runner will be from 2010 - 2023. More like Toyota changes the Tundra and 4Runner line every 12-14 years.

The 1GR has been around since 2002, I believe the only change for the 5th gen was adding Dual VVTi to the original Single VVTi system. So yeah, this truck has a 20 year old engine.

Makes it harder and harder to be a Toyota fan. 6th gen is still another 2-3 years away which is a long time in the truck world. Meanwhile Ford is releasing the new Bronco and the Wrangler is getting a Hemi. Toyota let this gen of Trucks and SUVs run for way way too long.

Rollover Issue

Toyota needs to address its ROLLOVER issue of the 4 Runner for the 6th generation. It is truly shocking that the 4Runner has a 24% chance of rolling or tipping over according to NHTSA. The engineers and corporate should be kicked and beaten up for not ever fixing this issue.

Usually Japanese care more about safety than Americans and it seems some methhead Americans might have infected the company and prevented them from fixing this issue. Japan is supposed to be synonymous with safety, unlike the USA. And continue to manufacture it ONLY in Japan.

Secondly, it needs to be just a little aerodynamic. While it isn't a sports car, nor should it be, it can afford to have some acceleration so it can help with agility when taking evasive action.

Also, they should keep the TRD badging or apply it to all vehicles to make it rugged. NEVER allow yellow color, only ghetto trash like yellow on an SUV. Keep masculine colors.

They should also reduce the configurations from 10 to like 3 at most. Standard, Offroad, TRD. Very simple.
