Everything Old Is New Again...

This ol' ride o' mine had one of the original inline sixes - the SuperHurricane. Bulletproof and good low rpm torque for crawling up or down hill. And, as mentioned, alot more elbow room in the engine compartment. Should never have gotten away from inline engines for torque applications in off-road rigs. Will be nice to see its return.

Looks like a Toyota diesel to me

Next-gen 2022 Toyota Tundra could get new diesel engine - No def? Better MPGs?

There's not a good reason for Toyota to build a diesel. Toyota is going hybrid and EV options for all models by 2025. Hybrid gasoline engines can run with unequal compression and exhaust strokes that net around 40% thermal efficiency. That's about the same as a diesel. The hybrid system solves the low torque output of those unequal effective stroke designs. So a hybrid gas engine is nearly as efficient as a hybrid diesel and costs a lot less to produce. In countries where diesel fuel is more common and usually significantly less expensive and emissions systems are not currently regulated in the same way - sure it makes sense. If the cost of a DEF system is similar to a hybrid system - in the USA Toyota's almost certainly going to opt for the hybrid.

Would a I6 gas or diesel be great? Yep. Toyota is just soo conservative it's not likely to happen. If they aren't even willing to put a v8 in the 4Runner that they already have and already sell in the same platform, I can't see anything exciting being very likely.

It's very unlikely that the emissions rules are going to get less strict. Jeep is also building an EV wrangler and a hybrid. Those are the future of the wrangler. I love the big v8 wrangler idea - but I think we all know it's going to be short lived. But hats off to Jeep for at doing something great when the window is open to do it.

I think we'll be left dreaming of a turbo 6, hoping for any sort of 6cyl, and getting a 4cyl. I might driving a turbo 6 or v8. It just won't be a Toyota for the first time in a long time.

Can't agree...

Since it's going to be a rich kid's toy they'll be rolling over everywhere when the idiots start street racing them. Not to mention probably using (mostly) the same driveline, and we know how often those break on Wranglers already, even with sub-300hp.

I'll take my 270hp, 400,000 mile reliable engine for 20+ years, thanks.

You better hold on to what you have for that 400k miles then.
Toyota is already getting rid of the LC. What do you think happens to the 4R once sales crash b/c they refuse to release a BOF with an engine that does anything more than drive slowly and loudly for 300k miles while every other major auto brand has a competitor that has more features AND more power.
People wanting an Offroad capable vehicle are a minority.
People wanting to drive the same car for 20+ years are a minority of a minority.
People wanting to dive a gutless car for a 20+ years, well...

I do agree with you that a bunch of a-holes are going to flip those V8 jeeps.

Not saying it won't happen, it's just that ALL the Japanese manufacturers have been unwilling to take the emissions hit by selling diesel passenger vehicles in the US.

Nissan SOLD a Titan with a Cummins diesel (looks like it's now gone) and someone smarter than me can maybe chime in whether this counts against the emissions standards for a manufacturer, or doesn't when they use a third party engine???
