Inline 6 for the 6th Gen?
Mazda which is partially owned by Toyota is getting inline 6’s for longitudinal applications. They will come in diesel too.
That would be great for the 4R imho. Smooth, more power, lots of room for wheel travel.
They say 2026 for these engines. Maybe that’s why Toyota is taking so long to show the 6th Gen.

Inline 6 with a 6 or 7 speed transmission (which would allow gearing of 4.11 or 4.56 without killing highway driving) would be awesome.

Pair it with a manual transmission and 4wd and I'll be first in line.
(Pun intended)

I absolutely love Mazda. Just recently bought a new Miata RF and let me tell you my 4Runner has been feeling left out lately. Mazda engines in future 4Runners would be a huge step up in both performance as well as drivability and handling. Keeping my fingers crossed for the next gen 4Runner, since I’ll be looking to trade up at that point.

With rumors surrounding the discontinuation of the LC in the US, this would be a viable option for the offroad enthusiast in the T4R. The LC got away from it's bare bones off road appeal and priced itself out of most US buyer budgets. A diesel 4Runner might not ever happen, but we can still dream lol. Just hope they keep the BOF.

Straight 6 will definitely give it more torque and at lower rpms. Add a turbo and 7-8 speed auto and it will be plenty for the 6th gen 4runner.... that's if they decide to go that route. Inline 6 tend to have less vibrations compared to a V6 in the rotational mass assembly which is why the 2JZ lasted as long as it did while making boat loads of power in only 3 liters.

This seems like a great idea for an off road vehicle, therefore Toyota won't do it.

Toyota is done.

No, that's not fair. We're hoping to just get ANY 6 instead of a base Subaru Forester motor and a CVT.

I doubt Toyota would sell a diesel they made in the US.
The only "Japanese" diesels RN are licensed American companies like Cummins.

There is 0% chance that Toyota will release a diesel in the US.
ZERO.

This. With all the diesel emissions scandals Toyota, Honda, Hyundai etc aren't touching that with a 10 ft pole.
