New 2021 TRD Prem detailing questions

Just traded my old trusty 2004 Limited V8 on a 2021 TRD Prem, and wanted to see if my thoughts on detailing products were OK given changes in recent years. Would appreciate any input, advice, cautions, etc:

Wash: Meguilars Gold and soft cotton towel, chamois to dry
Windows: Rain X
Wax: Mothers carnauba
Quick Detail: Griots spray
Tires, dash: 303 Interior / Exterior
Softex seats: Mothers VLR
Using microfiber towels or applicator pads on pretty much everything

How does the above sound to keep the new TRD looking good? Thanks

You will likely get more replies if you were to start this thread in the "maintenance/detailing" forum. Despite the naming of this section, there is no 6th Gen 4Runner as of yet so not much traffic here.

That said, looks like a pretty good list of products to me. I like 303 for interior plastics and softex. I use Chemical Guys Mr. Pink Super Suds wash. I like the microfiber two step glass cloth system since it uses just water and leaves no streaks. I use Mother's wheel and tire cleaner with a firm plastic bristle, contoured brush for the tires and a Chemical Guys soft bristle brush for wheels.

Forget the wax. Clay bar it and ceramic coat it. If recommend c-quartz 3.0. Way more protection than wax. I've done it on my last 2 cars. Car one, 2 years later and the water still beads off it. I also regularity use P&D beadmaker after I wash.

Let me offer my thoughts. I've been detailing part time out of my home for over 25 years. Recently, when I officially retired, I took on a part time job detailing for a local Toyota dealership. Yes, dealer detailing is different than what I do at home, but I get to use the dealership's used cars as a bit of a laboratory to test different products and processes. That said, here's my thoughts.

I think your wash and dry process is pretty solid, but nobody uses chamois anymore because there are less (possibly) damaging products out there today. In fact I'd take a high quality cotton towel over a chamois. Better yet, get a few really high quality microfiber drying towels. Make sure to take care of them differently than regular towels though.

I like 303 Areospace protectant, but one has to remember that it washes off in the next wash or rain storm.

The big thing I'd suggest doing differently is the wax. Traditional carnauba waxes are nice, but they can be a pain to apply and remove in certain conditions. More importantly, they don't last very long. The best you can really expect is about 2-3 months under optimum conditions. Use the wrong wash soap (like dish washing soap), and you can remove it instantly.

I'd suggest a couple of alternatives. The easiest for home detailing is a synthetic / polymer sealant. I happen to like Menzerna / Jescar Power Lock. It goes on and comes off much easier than traditional wax. Better yet, it lasts about twice as long.

Another alternative is a ceramic coating - as has already been mentioned. I like Carpro Quartz UK, but that's just personal preference. A decent ceramic coating can easily last a couple of years. The downside is that to really do ceramic coating right, you need to polish / correct the surface first, then apply and level the coating very carefully. Unless you have some experience with a coating. I'd recommend going to somebody who has. Although they're much easier to use than a few years ago, they're still tricky to get right.

Hope that helps.

Hi there-great input on detailing. Thanks for sharing. My car wash offers a ceramic coating in the drive thru wash for an extra $3. Is that worth it?

I can't say for certain, but I highly doubt it. A good ceramic coating is several layers that you allow to cure onto the paint.

your detailing plan is sound. although the most important step is the two bucket wash system or a variant were you flush your premium wash mitt of particulate often. I have a new 2021 TRD ORP with 400 miles. waiting for the weather here in Minnesota to warm up. I plan to do a full decontamination and a light polish, before applying an Adams Graphene Ceramic coating. The ceramic coatings are easily applied now by non professionals. Waxes and sealants are good but only last a few weeks. Turtle wax has a new graphene ceramic wax that will give almost a year of protection. its there new 75th anniv. edition. very good product. a little expensive.. 40$.

You will get all kinds of information about what to do and not do when it comes to detailing. I would say go here: Auto Geek Online Auto Detailing Forum read and learn and see what works best for you. I seal my vehicles once a year and do a 5 stage process that takes me a good 6 hours with a machine, but my process is not perfect by any means and will never be because what works for me may not work for you.

The "ceramic coating" that a car wash can apply for $3.00 isn't a true ceramic coating. There are a number of products that one can buy (Bead Maker, McKee's 37 Hyrdo Blue, etc.) that claim to be "ceramic coatings."

If you want my opinion, they are a type of surface coating that feels pretty slick, gives a nice gloss and beads water quite nicely for several months. But a true ceramic coating? I don't think so.

The real ceramic coatings - again in my opinion - are professionally applied, require some skill to apply correctly, are not cheap and last several years. I've been experimenting with ceramic coatings for about 8 years now and currently have CarPro CQuartz UK 3.0 ceramic coating on both of my older vehicles. (The new 4Runner will get the same coating as soon as it warms up.) There's a good deal of prep work required before you even start coating and then the real fun begins. I wouldn't call it easy to apply, but it's a whole lot better than the early coatings. The true professional ceramic coatings are even trickier to apply correctly - but generally last even longer.

Professional ceramic coating company down here claims 10 years of protection. They professionally detail your vehicle and hold your car in their garage for at minimum 24 hours to allow some undisturbed curing after application. Then they make one follow up appointment for your first car wash to walk you through how to properly wash and care for the coating to maximize durability of the coating. It also costs about 800 bucks... but damn do they take their service seriously. they also recommend coming back around the 5 year mark for them to assess for coating and do any “touch up” if needed.

800 bucks for that type of service honestly seems like a steal. If I had that near me I would do it, any paint correction + ceramic coats near me cost 1.3k - 3k+.
