True.
I like the fact that the 4Runner is built in Japan but would not hesitate if it was made in the US or (gasp) Mexico.

I think Toyota is going to be really careful on a new design of the 4runner. I think we are at the point where the same ol 4runner with slightly more technology features are ending. I mean, throw a rack on the top, add a sensor, throw a cooler in the back with grey rims and call it something else days
Are OVER
hopefully they don’t make the same Mistake Ford did with the new F150 back in the day with the curved rounded hood. Hell I don’t think I’ve seen once of those for at least 10 years. It’s like Atari with the ET game. It just simply vanished. No questions

Speak for yourself! I love my dinosaur, and since there's no way they're gonna do a turbodiesel engine... KISS! a hamburger bet says they're gonna do way too much on the 6th gen that reliability will become an issue in the long run and it'll increase the value of previous generations If you want the tech and 20spd transmissions with ecoboost and shit there's other options out there.
That being said I'm sure toyota will keep the 4runners current legacy in mind *crosses fingers*

You are all in for a BIG SURPRISE.
First... Toyota knows the 4Runner is a HOT HOT selling vehicle.
Second... they know RETRO is a hit... like the FJs they stopped selling in 2014
Third... They would like to be dominant over Jeep and the new Bronco.
The next 4Runner WILL have a removable top like the 1st Gen.

So that means no roll down rear window.

Yup the salesman at my local dealer has connects to the factory foreman in Japan because his great great grandmother was Japanese so his cousin works at Tahara. He said the 6th gen starts production in August and will have a removable top(since everyone and their first cousin that they married remembers the 1st gen 4Runner), updated hybrid turbo 22RE making 400 HP, high pinion full float axles and e-lockers with the full time Tcase from the LC300. There will be no more 4 door 4Runners because that hurts the retro image.

This has to be the first time we've had a 6th gen 'leak' connected to a great great grandmother.

Maybe there won’t even be a 6th Gen.
The current models sell well as is, with just a few tweaks here and there every year.

With the new Gen Tundra being announced over the last 24 hours, this leaked photo continues to age well.

I read that the Japanese Market is getting the “Hilux Surf” again aka (4Runner). It’s right hand drive. There are different frames for RHD and LHD vehicles and if you are planning to do both a single frame would be the best way to go. We dont need a RHD in the US.
Japanese dont like vehicles manufactured in the US. Ford has tried, and other US manufactures too, for decades to sell US models in Japan and have not been successful. Ford pulled out of Japan a few years ago after “being” there for a long time.

Looks like they will stick with building the Land Cruiser, Prado, GX, and 4Runner at the same Tahara plant in Japan. This means it will remain BOF and likely share engines with the Prado/GX.

Typically they release new 4Runners in Q3. So my best guess is that we're looking at Sept 2022 for the release of the 6th gen as a 2023 Model Year.

Supposedly the next gen GX was leaked online and that is believed to be the underpinnings of the next 4Runner. But, Toyota won't say anything until latter half of next year.

We're getting a detuned 3.5L Tacoma engine or the 200 HP Highlander Hybrid motor, aren't we?
