Newly Patented Toyota Twin Turbo V8. ...4Runner?

So when do we see this in a 4Runner? ...Probably never, too bad.

Maybe they would actually have a hood scoop that wasn't just clownish festooning and actually did something to accommodate the huge pile of turbos on top of that engine.

Why would they be patenting a new V8? I thought they were finished developing V8 technology.

Probably for a high performance Lexus sedan.

I thought the V8 stoppage extended to Lexus, too.

A patent doesnt necessarily mean production right away, especially a V8. It does mean that all the experts out there claiming that EV and hybrid is taking over and Toyota's ICE's are dead, have something to ponder.
The V8 will most likely be high end options for Lexus, and the 4 and 6 cyl configs will end up in Toyotas.

Often it takes 5+ years before a patent is formally approved. I have 3 patent applications still pending approval in the US and Europe, filed in 2016-2017.

Yes, but because filings do take place early on and if not withheld from publication sometimes, they become fodder for product planning leaks.

Nice collection (sig), plus the bold is accurate.

Thanks! I sold the 1st gen to pay for a future 4th gen project. Parts are slowly coming together and finding the time, as well as the know how won't be easy.

Hard to say which vehicles these engines will end up in, or if they are put in any offerings sold in the US. But, one thing is certain, Toyota corporate is great at keeping us guessing. According to the video, and take that with a grain of salt, it has been patented. Could this have been applied for years ago and it just went through?

You’d probably want the scoop near an air to air intercooler… which you wouldn’t want right on top of the turbocharger as configured in the patent. Scoop fed, top mounted air to air intercoolers tend to suffer from heat soak more than air to water intercoolers, so you would want to keep a little distance between the intercooler and turbos. I suspect hot v turbos tend to use front mount intercoolers.
