The odd part about that is that it has the Sequoia. So that's a north america only vehicle. But it also says "crown" goes on sale later in the year. That would be a big surprise to see a Toyota Crown go on sale in the USA.
The Crown SUV is literally just a highlander. So maybe it's a highlander trim?
And there's the Crown sedan - but it's like a base model GS350 that sold very poorly. And the GS was axed. The Crown sedan is supposed to end production in 2022 and the Crown SUV be the replacement. I'm not sure there's a market for a sedan slotted between camry, avalon, and ES350. I'm not really sure there's even a viable long term market for those sedans other than maybe the Camry continuing on.
Is there really a market for a $65-70k highlander to fit between the current highlander and the RX350? I don't see it. But who knows.
Just spitballing - maybe the GS/Crown that was ultimately used as the hydrogen Mirai will become a luxury EV sedan under the name Crown? That's the best I can come up with for something existing under the "crown" nameplate. It's already an EV platform. Just swap hydrogen fuel cell and tank for batteries.

Avalon will also end production in 2022.
Toyota entered a trademark for “Grand Highlander,” which is supposed to be peers with the Lexus TX and fill the need for a 3-row CUV larger than the current Highlander/RX-L. Maybe they are going with “Crown” instead?
Agree that it’s very odd, though…doesn’t seem like “Toyota Crown” would carry much brand equity or recognition here in the U.S. Personally, I immediately think of a huge Ford…

personally i dont see the 4R moving production outside of tahara plant due to the retooling and parts supply logistics. when all the other models based on the same platform is made in japan, it wouldnt make long term financial viability to moved a single model to the usa and find a production line to fit a 4R into.
the taco i dont see an issue since its so different than the hilux to justify production in the usa.

Next gen of all the BOF models use a single platform. Hilux and Taco are probably going to be unified as a single truck again. Toyota should be able to produce any BOF model on any of the assembly lines. It probably depends on production capacity at each plant as far as where they are built. I think it's pretty likely that the next Tacoma, 4R, Prado, GX, Hilux, and Fortuner all share the same chassis, suspension, and axles with the only difference between all of them being bodies and wheel base.

This.
Plus the 4Runner is only sold in North America. Think of how much money Toyota would save on shipping if it was assembled in North America and didn't have to travel across the Pacific.

and all that cost saving goes out the window when you have to ship all the parts centralized in japan to build all the other models to NA for just 1 model.
if they didnt ship the parts to NA, then they would have find another source closer to usa to build all the parts for the NA model.

toyota crown is the executive class of toyota sedans (ie: it usually means the person that owns the vehicle has a chauffeur and is mostly sold in japan only and some Asian markets). the usa equivalent is the lexus LS series with the executive package

I disagree.
Shipping parts will be much cheaper than shipping completed vehicles. Also, with the new TGNA platform, they will be sharing more parts between vehicles.

The Crown was previously two models a "Crown" and a "Crown Majesta" - the later being the LS sibling. The larger Majesta was discontinued in 2018. Since then only the regular Crown sedan has been sold that is smaller. It's more like a Lexus GS size. It's shares the same 115" wheel base, but is a few inches narrower than the 2nd gen Murai that is how Toyota used what was the next gen GS that never came to be. The LS is quite a bit larger - it's over a foot longer than the current crown sedan.
Anyway, the Crown sedan is slated for discontinued production this year. And the news reports are that the nameplate will be used on a highlander/kluger. That's what's curious at to me about it. Avalon is going away. And so that would open the potential slot in the lineup for a Crown sedan to fit in above the Camry. But the Crown sedan is now a highlander. And it's hard to see where there's room between a Platinum trim Highlander, a Venza, and a base model RX350 or RX350L. I'm not sure how another luxury highlander variant fits, but also the Avalon is gone and luxury sedans in general are DOA.
So what is this new Crown model? Is it a re-birth of the luxury sedan that no one wanted or a new flavor of highlander right in the middle of an already very crowded midsize SUV segment that Toyota covers with 4 current vehicles already.
Or???

Crown is slated to replace the Avalon. It is going to be a sedan, not an SUV.

I vote for the Land Cruiser front. Looks much better. I just bought a 2022 4Runner and love the looks ...all but the front end storm trooper grill.

Insights:
It will be uglier than the current generation.
It will have a drive train with less HP and torque than the current generation.
If they manage to prove me wrong on #2 it will still have less power than all of its competitors.
The extended cab will have less legroom.
It will only come in lime green and electric blue.
All accessories will be barbie pink.
It will have a better radio than the current generation and it will have 3 blink turn signals.
Fan boys will ignore all of this and rave about how amazing it is.

Had seen this mock up on Instagram of the 6th gen a couple days ago. Looks like they the 1st gen with the removeable back. Not too bad looking, but I will always love my 5th😂
