I'm more confident about Toyota's hybrids given their track record. I've read articles about their longevity when used as taxis.

Not so sure about their turbos, though they've used them extensively in the Lexus product line.

Renderings at this point are silly and frankly useless. I don’t get the interest at all.

Any chance that the 6th gen will have a V6 turbo option? That would be awesome.

I pesonally believe that 6th Gen 4runner will have 2 powertrain options.
1) Inline 4 Turbo
2) V6 Hybrid.
The main reason they used turbos in Tundra is because they replaced the V8! And it's a workhorse people genuinely tow a lot with those things! NA V6 Hybrid wasn't going to cut it! And that's also the reason why I believe 4R V6 will be NA! No point of giving it that much torque and HP, but from reliability standpoint it makes perfect sense! Give the MPG chasers/ Soccer moms I4 turbos keeping it relatively in budget for lower trims and for the TRD, Trail, offroad and higher trims v6 Hybrid! And I have no doubt Toyota will go that route because that's the most logical configuration with long-term reliability as the main focus which is how they do things!
And they didn't do terrible with the new Tundra IMO. In the mild commercial truck area the garbage GM and Ford is pushing off the line Thundra will still be a 10X more reliable truck if you punctual with the oil changes and proper driving habits! You won't have valves, cams failures or any other premature engine components failures due to poor design! Plus you gotta pay to play specially in these times with the amount of restrictions they have! Also most of those trucks generate money for people/business can afford to keep up with the turbos! I know 18 year Olds keeping up with turbo beaters LOL!

I feel like the competition is all moving toward increased efficiency with a simultaneous increase in performance, and that Toyota shall be no different.

Because the 5th gen has been around for over 10 years and a lot of people like myself think the 3rd gen is the best and hope the new one has a little bit of third gen flavor.

I’m familiar with them, but curious what you’d specifically like to see resembling 3rd gen.

I like the size do the third gen. The rounded look vs the 5th which is more square everywhere. Also, less pregnant, the 5th gen looks really bloated.

The you tube rendering is pretty interesting. The front that looks like the land cruiser is a winner for me.

Have any of you heard about the 2024 Lexus GX?

I knew I wasn't doubting myself, when it became clear that the USA folks were keeping mum extremely.

The 2024 GX, is going very niche. This is not going to be your mama's Lexus, as has been the case since December 2002.

This vehicle loses all sense of its curves and harkens back to the 1990 Prado, aka none other than a modern take on the 70-Series, but in a luxurious and high tech laden package.

This vehicle is being designed to compete with G550 and Defender 110 on the lower end of price range. The ultimate Lexus offroader. It is like Lexus hit reset and brought the 70-Series into the 21st century. The bad news? No V8 and no SFA like the J76. This migrates the GX to GA-F, but takes Lexus in a whole new direction.

Launch is December 2023, named GX 550. Allegedly a mild hybrid married to the V35A-FTS. Does this affect the 4Runner? Well considering how there is no 4.6L in the 4Runner, don't count on the TTV6.

One question I do have is, why wouldn't Toyota put the TX 500h and RX 500h V6 powertrain (8GR-FXS) in the 2024 4Runner? Surely it has been tuned for more torque in these crossover applications. I4T mated to hybrid is coming.
I don't doubt that this may happen. But I find it very disappointing. And I think it'll be a long term mistake. Just like how Toyota overpriced the LC200 so badly that it killed the product line. I think they'll lose a lot of current GX buyers going that route and not pick up many new ones.

A lot of people like me would have bought an LC200 if it were offered in a mid-range trim that didn't weigh 6k lbs. I want the hardware. The v8, the 8AT, the larger axles and longer travel suspension. I not only don't need the luxury - I actively do not want the 500+lbs of bloat to haul around. And it's a PITA to strip the weight back out.

The biggest disappointment is that Toyota is withholding the functional components and products to make it tied in with the luxury side. But basically only for the USA market. And only in some segments. Tundra will offer the V35A hybrid in a base model work truck for around $45k. But if I want the same parts in an SUV it has to be $100k?? There's a disconnect going on between the marketing teams for the two product lines.

Anyway - love the idea of a boxy SUV that's closer in form to the LC70. I hate the fact that it'll likely only come in Lexus trim for $100k and rarely be seen on anything more than a dirt road for the next 20 years like the GX.

Maybe the next 4R will be great. I hope so. But it's just so so late to the game and if it's like the new Tundra it'll be pretty underwhelming too because it's taken so long and the world has moved on.

OTOH - I do expect the next Rav4 to be pretty great. Toyota seems to actually care about the Rav.

well thanks for the info on the MY24 pushback @Carmaker1 . works out wonderfully for my budget timeline of jan-2023 of buying a new 4runner and dragging my 2014 (dec-2013) 4runner limited along for a few more years. only thing we have to decide is whether we trade in our 2018 platinum tundra for the new 2022 tundra platinum or hold off on the new tacoma in MY24

I won't comment on the Lexus because I do not like any of their SUVs except for the RX350. The GX a cool idea but it just looks so ugly.

Regarding the Tundra, well traditonally its always been underwhelming. Out of the big 3 (US Automakers), Toyota is the only company that actually sells more than the trucks from Honda and Nissan. So it doesn't have the highest market share but it is enough. I do think with the new Tundra it will attract some buyers, because the Tundra was really old.

I just hope the new 4Runner doesn't look bad. I don't think the 4Runner is late to the game, it sells well and the only other car that it competes with is the Jeep Wrangler, there is no other off-road inspired SUV like it. SUV sales have been dramatically increasing, just look at what they did with the Toyota Highlander and Lexus NX. So I think the 4Runner will be really good.

Same, 2023 is the perfect time for me to buy a car. The benefit is that by then We will know what the 6th gen looks like so we can decide to buy the last gen or get the new gen. Im just curious what the TRD colors will be by then.

Whoaaaa, back up the bus. What do you mean regarding the 2024.5 Land Cruiser? Do you mean just a regular refresh for the 300 series outside of the US... or is there a chance it could come to the US?

The current tundra was a real world beater when it came out. It was basically an hd truck running gear and had the best specs in the truck world for a half ton. Compare an 07 tundra to the half tons of that era. It was bigger stronger, faster, etc than anything on the market. It still holds up seriously well other than mpg. Mpg is a killer though.

The new one would have been a world beater in 2015 or so when it was time for a new model. In 2021 it's immediately 5 years out of date. I still might buy one. It does what I need. But to be broadly competitive it had to have a PHEV at a minimum and probably needs a full EV option too.

I can already buy a PHEV Wrangler. And the 4runner doesn't even have a 6 speed transmission.* If the next gen in 3 years is just a mild hybrid as the top model, it's not going to compete very well. Kinda like it does now. It sells more than it used to. And that's some indication of success. But in comparison to the segment the 4R is actually doing quite poorly. It hasn't kept up with them market growth like it should have. It went from selling more than the Wrangler to less than half of the sales in one generation. Another generation that falls even further behind? It'll be the last one I fear.

* Technically it is a six-speed. Toyota just won't let 4Runner owners use all six gears. Because Toyota gives zero f's about the 4R to the point that Toyota seemingly goes out of its way to make the 4Runner worse.
