He must be confusing it with the Toyota Prado, which is the 4Runner like product for the rest of the world.

(Automotive Press / David is getting confused by his own hype and speculation.)

Honestly, if I was running running the SUV division at Toyota I'd deliver the 6th Gen after sales tanked for a few years in a row. I dont see that happening. They are selling every one they can build as fast as they can build them it seems. I'd let it ride for another 5 years.

I remember so many people prophesizing the demise of the 4Runner when the Bronco came out. It didnt happen as far as I can see. I dont know what it would take to reduce the demand for the 4Runner at this time. Even building it in Mexico probably wont do it imho.

There is risk every time you redesign a vehicle that you will loose market share because you did it wrong. Imagine if the new turbo 4 started eating turbo bearings when pushed hard. lol That would do it. Give it the styling of a Lexus lol that would do it for me. Price it at $44,000 for an SR5 2WD lol Im out.

The prices rumored for the new Sequoia are hilarious. I do expect the 6th gen to be way more expensive than the 5th gen.

I’m growing old. I don’t want/need the latest and greatest. My ‘18 still has low mileage and will likely last for the rest of my driving days/my death. I’m happy with my T4R and am unconcerned about the 6th gen or where it will be built.

I assumed there were some countries in Africa and the Middle East that got the 4R as well but it appears to only be in this hemisphere. Still makes more sense to make the Tacoma and 4Runner on the same platform in Mexico for the Americas.

I would love to have the Hilux as an option and they aren't made in Japan.

I read they were moving Tacoma assembly line for Tx to Mx to allow the Tx plant to mfg 4Runnrs?? That was a couple of yrs ago too?

P.S. I believe quite a few yrs back Volkswagen had Major issues with Quality/Reliability W/vehicles built in a Mx plant ??

I was working for Toyota when I ordered my 2004 T4R in 2003. At that time there were rumors that the 4Runner builds were moving to North America. So 20+ years later they're still in Japan. Toyota moves production of vehicles where it needs to be, where it's efficient to build them (and they have moved them back if so needed). Camrys were built in Japan, Kentucky and Indiana at the Subaru plant. Siennas were built in Kentucky, then moved to Indiana. (...and so on) Major components (engines, trannys, etc.) are made in the US, Japan, India and elsewhere. The quality of a Toyota is not a function of where it is built.

I retired from Toyota in 2016 and Tacomas were already being built in Mexico for about 7 or 8 years. They are selling Tacomas built in Mexico and Texas.

Every car manufactured anywhere in the world has issues. I don't know of a totally bullet proof car being manufactured anywhere. I have owned Plymouths, an Austin, a Rambler, a Dodge, Chevys, a GMC, a Volkswagen, Oldsmobiles and 5 Toyotas (2 of which I bought before working for Toyota and I still own 3).

I will always buy a Toyota. They have given me more pleasing, trouble free miles than any other manufacturer. Oh! What a feeling!

They were making room for the Sequoia to be built in Texas. There was a post on here somewhere with a link to jobs advertised at the Mexican Toyota factory. It mentioned upcoming projects starting in Dec 2023 and another in Jan 2024. The latter was 610b, apparently 610 is a code used for 5th gen 4Runners in the parts supplier's world.

I bought a 2018 Audi Q5 Teknik that was made in Mexico. It was fast and very fun to drive but it had issues. Rear seat release broke, power windows would go half up then go all the way down. You could not stop the window from going down. One of the front springs snapped sitting in the yard. Transmission had a few grinds and bumps on the highway. But it drove like a Porsche. Sold it and got a 2022 4Runner.

I had 97 and 02 Jettas. Both made in Mexico. Both flawless for over 100k miles.
The 97 never even needed to have the clutch replaced.

The reason I won't buy a 6th gen isn't b/c of where it's built but b/c of the bad decisions they're making on engines.

I agree on the engine. I love my V8 and the 7,000 towing capacity. I also like the X-REAS shocks. I plan on keeping my T4R as long as possible, as long as the body holds out. If I ever need to replace it I will probably go with the Tundra or Sequoia.

More 2022 Toyota Tundra factory Quality assembly and factory Quality Assurance checks, or the lack thereof, at work...

Toyota recalls 2022 Tundra for potential axle separation
Some of the new trucks left the factory with loose axle flange nuts

Toyota is recalling 46,176 examples of its redesigned 2022 Tundra pickup — standard gasoline engine and hybrid alike — to address a potential issue with the rear end that can lead to axle separation. Per Toyota, some Tundras were shipped with rear axles that may have left the factory with flange nuts that were not properly tightened.

If the 6th Gen was Built in Mexico…

I would not buy one after buying my Mexico built 2021 trd Tacoma. My Tacoma was riddled with problems.

I think the issues with new cars being built have to do with covid and supply chain issues than location. Before my 2022 4runner got totaled I noticed it already rattled and the welds on my frame had a ton of splatter compared to my earlier 5th gen 4runners

My 2011 5th gen had much better build quality than my 2016 4rd gen Tacoma MIM. The 4runner despite being 10+ years old, had less squeaks, rattles, and fit/finish problems than the 5 year old MIM Tacoma. Yeah, I rather have a MIJ 4Runner.

My '22 has 12000 kms on it and it is as tight as a drum. I crawled under it before it was undercoated and it seemed good. I did have concerns about the quality due to possible turnover at the plant and subpar material and components being used due to the supply chain.

What was rattling in yours?

I read the entire thread.

Where the 4Runner is built does matter but not for a lot of the reasons I see posted.

It's not a matter of Japanese workers having a better work ethic, more pride and a greater attention to detail compared to Mexicans. It's not a matter of how much the wage is in Japan versus Mexico. It is not a matter of Toyota making more profit per unit and thus being "cheap" by moving production to Guanajuato.

The plant itself, Tahara, can not be duplicated and THAT is why the quality will almost certainly drop. The Tahara plant is the most sophisticated, automated, top shelf plant in the automotive world. It's why everything built there - Land Cruiser, 4Runner, Lexus GX, LX, LS, etc. ranks at or near the top for reliability.

It is Toyota's flagship plant and is one of a kind.
