It's definitely a tough call. When I was shopping for my current 4Runner, I was really eyeing up the Grand Cherokee because I do a lot of driving. That being said, reliability is something that as once as we give it up, we notice it big time. If Grand Cherokees held their value (akin to the 4Runner), I'd say it would be easier to make a GC Purchase as getting a "Bridge" vehicle to get you, what think is, the 6th Gen Runner.

Another thing to think about, I, personally, would never buy the first year of any car model. With a Jeep, I wouldn't buy the first two years. So that means you're looking at a '24 Grand Cherokee

I love the roll down rear window, use it every day just for ventilation. Great for dogs, and great for lumber or a surfboard that's too long for the cargo area. To me it's another critical feature that sets the 4Runner apart from any other SUV. But if the new Sequoia is any kind of preview of the redesign of the 4Runner, look to Toyota dropping the roll down rear window .

The new Sequoia ditched the roll down rear window on the 2023, and did some strange things with the rear cargo area to accommodate the hybrid battery. Will the 6th Gen 4Runner follow suite?

If it gets you to the place when you can make an informed decision, it seems like it is worth taking the chance on the new 4Runner as you seem hesitant about the Jeep. When the new 4Runner is announced, I think you'll have a better idea.

Tough call, I can say I'd never buy a Jeep as a "stop gap" vehicle, in other words if you want a 6th gen 4runner, a Jeep is going to tank in value in 2 years more than most. The only way you really make out with a Jeep is if it's what you REALLY want, you get a reliable one, and you keep it a long time because the depreciation is higher than most.

There are some alluring things about the Grand Cherokee, the v8 for one, and in the overland with the off road package an arguably better 4wd system, 1.5" more clearance, and what Toyota can't figure out yet (but prices as if they included!) creature comforts and tech....HUD, heated steering wheel, pano roof, etc. The ride and handling is much better, seats are better, stereo is very good, the cameras are MUCH better.....the only real "miss" they did was putting tons of gloss piano black in it, gets scratched to heck in a month and looks horrible.

However at this point what it seems like the 23' 4-runner is going to be the same thing the 22' was, so in that case why wait. They are only going to jack up the MSRP next year, and probably add next to nothing to it. The pace we are going I would't be surprised to see the 6th gen end up a 25' year model.

Now the 6th gen becomes more interesting because it's a wild card. If they turn it into the 23' Sequoia, add a bunch of tech which is good, but lose 25% of the cargo space for a hybrid battery, and the turbo 4cyl ends up just as neutered for power as the current 4 runner is but they add $5k to the price tag.....putting a TRD Pro over $60k......do you still want one?

The only other downside to the Jeep right now is due to part shortages, no Overlands are being made with the off-road package that gets you the eLSD and 18" wheels, beefier rear axle and skid plates.

The Bronco's are great, but the way things are going it might be 25' before they are available at even MSRP.....car flipping has become an industry, tons of people putting in reservations to flip cars now on everything, Raptors, Bronco's, ZR2's, AT4x's, anything popular people are dumb enough to pay over MSRP for. It's doing to car prices/availability what AirBnB did for home prices.

In the end between the two I think it comes down to your priorities, if you want something to Mod that's going to see tons of off roading and you don't care about creature comforts, and will drive it for 20 years the 4-runner is the clear winner, but if you want something that's much nicer to daily drive, with more tech and power, don't want to put 37" tires on it, but can still handle as much off roading as the stock 4-runner can....if not more....(the Grand Cherokee has better approach, departure, and breakover angles than even the TRD Pro) the Grand Cherokee is the winner (potential reliability aside). The reliability or lack of along with fast depreciation is the kicker with the Jeep.

Only other downside is evidently no Overland's are being built/orderable with the off-road package that gets you the beefier rear axle, eLSD, 18" wheels, and various skid plates.

I have to admit, I've never owned a 4-runner, but my 76' blazer had a roll down rear window, and to be honest I never really missed it much. I don't really understand why 4-runner people are so attached to that feature. I do understand it's handy in a garage etc. if you can't raise the lift gate. Perhaps it's because I've never had a vehicle with a full lift gate, my S10 was split with a tailgate and I never found that too annoying, except that every 2-3 years you had to replace the lift shocks.

Now what I would miss is no tailgate, I much preferred having a split liftgate/tailgate on my S10 blazer, pickup, and 76' blazer that you could drop and sit on, work on etc. without having to make room in the cargo area. I suppose the slider could work for that, but only if you have nothing in the cargo area. It's all relative though, it's also a lot nicer to not have to deal with a tailgate in the way trying to get cargo in/out. I suppose whatever we've had as a feature is easier for us to become attached to.

But lots of people get attached to a feature, when GM came out with the new pickups that didn't have a column shifter, oh my goodness guys were more upset than a baby no one had changed a diaper on for days, swearing up and down they'd never buy another GM pickup.

It's a personal thing for sure. We have a dog, so kind of important when she's shoehorned in the back on a camping/road trip. I love the extra ventilation with a front window or the sunroof open, especially when the car's been sitting in the sun and want to evacuate all the hot air quick before turning on the AC.

I tried like hell to get the Cargo Deck for the faux tailgate effect. But not able to with the insane shortages these days :-(.

A decade ago I worked at a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/RAM dealership prepping new and used vehicles for the lot. In short, a five year old Ford F-150 with 50k miles felt tighter and had a better quality feel than any new Chrysler product.

Ummm … your priority is opposite of mine. Damn the stereo, I value a vehicle that will take me where I want to go and bring me home for many years and miles. At 135k miles, if you kept your maintenance up and didn’t abuse it, your 4Runner many more miles of reliable life left.

Lumber and any other long items you want to haul. It's the best way to have an SUV and still use it for utility.
Ambulance doors are ridiculous.
Lift windows are a compromise but you see them less and less.

Long items is definitely one I didn't think about, in the S10 the lift glass accommodated that fine, but yeah not an option on a lift gate.

Agree on the swing out doors, never liked them they always seem in the way. I suppose it's nice to have the spare outside the vehicle but there's dedicated solutions for that now too, and if you did a lot of camping there's some nice fold out table/shelf options for the swing out doors but they seem a little gimmicky. It's was a negative when I was looking at the GX 460.

Yeah. I am a woodworker on the side so if I got rid of the 4runner I'd either have to buy a trailer or get a truck. Neither really appeal to me until someone makes a really nice version of the Ford Maverick.
