'23 4Runner or '22 Cherokee L Overland

I am highly motivated to replace my '10 4Runner. I am trying to figure out what makes the best sense though.

My 4R's reliability has been amazing, so I am debating on waiting to see what the '23 looks like, however with trade in values so high I am tempted to just pick up a Cherokee L Overland as there seem to be a fair amount actually in stock.

New car prices are not going down, that is a given. Will dealers go back to 'haggling/discounts' who knows, most dealers are firm on sticker or more due to low supply. The increased value in my trade more than offsets any discount/deal I would expect if this were non-pandemic times.

How close does anyone think the '22 Tundra will resemble the new '23 4Runner...interior and exterior?

I have gone through a lot of reviews on the L and not really seen anything too alarming.

How confident is Toyota that '23 will indeed be the refresh year?

If history repeats itself the interiors should be similar.

I just purchased my ‘22 4Runner ORP and the Jeep Cherokee L was a close second. I preferred the more utilitarian feel of the 4R and the Jeep was not as fun to drive.

Probably a reason there are a lot of Jeep Cherokee Overlands in stock.

What did you like about driving the 4R over the JGCL? Was the length of the L a factor in that?

I've thought about a Jeep Grand Cherokee myself. I'd get the two row version, it has more cargo space in the back, similar to the 4Runner.

As mentioned above, I like the more utilitarian feel of the 4Runner. Seats that clean easily, no worry about getting mud every where, that kind of thing. The JGC has more leather and fancy trim that wouldn't feel right getting all muddy and dirty.

On the other hand, I really like the AWD system in the JGC. I prefer actual LSD's over the artificial LSD's (LSD by braking) in the 4Runner. I would prefer Torsen LSD's front, center and rear, but the clutch pack type is a close second.

Quote:
Jeep's top-of-the-line Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive system uses the same NV245 transfer case as the Quadra-Trac II setup and adds electronically operated limited-slip differentials to both front and rear axles. Each LSD has its own clutch pack, and if traction is lost at one wheel, power is shifted to the other. While Quadra-Trac II can shift power to the axle with the most traction, Quadra-Drive II can shift power to the wheel with the most traction, and therefore is less reliant on the braking system to arrest wheel-slip.

I don’t think it’s a question of Toyota’s confidence. More a matter of what the crystal ball says for everyone outside of Toyota making guesses as to what’s coming and when.

At this point, you can make a plausible case for a 2023 launch or a 2024+ launch. Or whether production remains in Japan or moves to North America. The only thing that seems consistent between all the rumor mills is that the V6 will be gone, a Turbo-4 (seen in the new Lexus NX) will replace it, and there will be some sort of electrification option (hybrid, PHEV, etc.).

If the goal is to lock in the higher value of the ‘10 now, would an option be to get a ‘22 4Runner and take the bet that the ‘22’s value will hold up fairly well such that you can make a decision in ‘23 or ‘24 on whether to move to the 6th gen when launched, go with something else, or keep the ‘22?

My one hesitation is that the Cherokee L's rear window does not open. A few times a year I will purchase items that need to extend out the back window a bit, which will need to go on top of the Jeep.

Plus when packing for trips I will load the back, then close the tailgate and drop the window. It amazing how much more you can fit inside when you load that way as you can back against the tailgate tightly. You just have to remember to do the reverse as if you open it will be an avalanche.

I really wish we knew a bit more about the next gen and when/if it will be released.

I think I will take another swing by the Jeep dealer and look again.

As mentioned in a prior post, it is 'odd' that there are so many of these on the dealership lots though. You can't find a 4Runner, Tahoe, Yukon, etc. That does sit in the back of my mind.

The first time the mule kicks you, it's the mule's fault...

I have had my one Chrysler product.

Bought my daughter a Jeep JL Wrangler. Less than two months later something is lose in the dash. It rattles. Bought my 2018 4runner TRD off-road new. Zero squeaks or rattles. The manual 4wd engagement on the TRD is smooth while the JL Transfer case takes some effort.

If looking at the Jeep GC consider the 3.6 V6. Stellantis Hemi engines have what many consider an oiling problem related to cylinder deactivation. Stellantis does have a straight 6 engine coming soon. That sounds interesting. For the complexity, price and benefits I'd skip the Jeep diesel engine.

I came from a 2014 grand Cherokee and an 09 grand Cherokee before that. Never again.

Traded in my 2014 with 230k miles on it. Now, that sounds nice right? I had what they used to offer called a maxcare lifetime warranty. It legit was lifetime. Bumper to bumper. Literally covered everything not wear and tear.
Head unit replaced twice (once after a month into ownership). Countless water pumps broke. Headlight ballester on both sides (forcing you to replace the entire headlight assembly), hemi engine torn apart and rebuilt at 120k miles which was a 9k repair but cost me 100 deductible, engine mounts replaced, two different oil leaks, suspension problems they never could solve, etc. You get the picture. I miss the small bells and whistles but still.

Traded it in for 7k for a 21 pro and never looked back. They just don’t put those things together anywhere near as well.

But other than that, everything was fine?

LMAO

As a former owner and observer of friends who have Jeeps, I can't help but smile (in disapproval) b/c by now, one would think to stay away from Jeep products. The new JGC and GW are very nice, but I wouldn't drive one even if you GAVE it to me. They and other Jeep products are utter garbage (say what you want about wranglers, i don't care if your feelings are hurt).

My rear pinion bearing is going and I'm looking down the barrel of a $1300 bill to get it fixed. All mechanics have told me it's totally worth to do it b/c it's a 4Runner. I'll gladly pay it. If it were a Jeep (i've had to replace 2 rear diffs in my 97 ZJ), I'd probably throw it away. Literally.
