Unless the 6th gen has a removable roof and a lot of Bronco type features I think the 5th gen will be the most sought after generation. I predict the rear window will not roll down on the next gen.

I am coming up on the end of a lease in September, and am looking to get into a 4Runner for my next vehicle. I have the opportunity to purchase a ‘22 pro at $3k above msrp, but am unsure about how trade in will be handled once the 6th gen comes out. My overall end goal will be to get into a 6th gen pro, but obviously don’t know when exactly that will be possible. Would you purchase the ‘22 in this scenario and trade in when the 6th gen becomes available, or hold off? Any advice y’all can offer is most appreciated.

No one knows what Trade-In on a 2022 Pro will be in the future. The Supply Chain nightmare my end and the new 6th gen is a huge hit, with 300hp, 35mpg 4 banger/8 speed drivetrain, and used gas guzzler 5th Gen 4Runners won't be a hot item any more. Or, the 6th Gen may be a model with problems that take a couple years to work through like the Tundra, lose some big 4R fans due to no roll down rear window and messed up cargo area (due to the hybrid battery bulge compromises made to store the 3rd Row seats) on the Sequoia. If you like the '22 Pro right now, buy it (all the Dealer markups around here are $10K, so $3K doesn't sound outrageous) and enjoy it. When the 6th Gen finally comes out, wait a year or two to see if there are issues (usually are). Then decide. As good as the 4Runner resale value holding up, history before this time period never says a car is any kind of "investment".

This is nothing new I went to buy a Tacoma double cab back in 2003 and Larry Miller Toyota in Peoria Arizona wanted $3000 above MSRP for what they called ADP. Additional dealer profit because he told me I was moving up to a double cab from the car I was driving needless to say I walked out. No chip shortage nothing else lot was loaded with vehicles I laughed at him and left. I'm sure there are dealerships out there that will sell you one for MSRP without a problem you just have to look. Enough with the chip shortage bullshit. They were even trying to pull that card when we were looking at a used RAV4 giving us the sob story about how they don't have a lot of new cars and they have to make money to walked out of there too. The look on the managers face when I said so this car doesn't have a chip was priceless and looked dumb as hell. Dealers have to pay for a vehicle every month is it on the lot. 3000 to 10,000 over MSRP let it sit

I just talked to Findlay Toyota Prescott Arizona they have a 2022 Trd Pro 4runner with a 10K mark up they said because of the color that's funny. It can sit on the lot With a 10 K mark up that's ridiculous. I don't think that's the reason that it's marked up 10k because of the color but OK.

If they get rid of the roll down rear hatch window and destroy the cargo area like they did on the new Sequoias, we will be buried in our 2022 ORP!

It is a shame the dealers do this.
Really messes it up for so many people.
Keeps the cars out of the hands of good people.
I'd love a pro but I am spec'ing out a Off Road Premium for this reason.

Are the dealers doing this are is the general public to blame?
There are six Toyota dealerships in the KC metro. One wanted $3000 over MSRP, another demanded a non-refundable deposit, another forced buyers to use in-house financing at crazy interest rates, yet another was adding thousands of dollars in dealer add-ons like nitrogen tires and paint protection garbage.
I laughed at every one of those dealers, in person and loudly on the showroom floor to the sales manager's faces. I even pointed my finger.
If everybody did this, there wouldn't be any dealers pricing their inventory at $68K. It's your money, walk away and let those dealers go bankrupt.

I accept that there will always be some people who are stupid with their money. There will also always be some people who must have a ride immediately and can't wait.
But the general public mostly wants a new ride rather than needs one. This majority has been propagandized into believing that they have no choice but to pay these absurd prices. You do have a choice. Tell the dealership you want to buy but they can stick their gouging price right between the goal posts.
There are not enough $100K Escalade customers out there or enough need to have a ride to survive customers to keep the industry afloat. The power of the purse lies with the customer, not the manufacturer nor the dealership.
Enough people say no, prices will fall.

Many don't care and have enough $$ to not worry or think about saving $5K or $10K on a 80K vehicle. They will happily pay $100K MSRP+ for a Ford diesel truck or a BMW M60i and not want the hassle of negotiations and all that comes with it. I see this often. If they want a specific vehicle, they want it now, and will buy it. I'm not wired that way but that's just me.
A neighbor recently bought his son a new Ford Raptor that he ordered from Ford. I think he paid around $85K which was the MSRP and he was quite elated. At least it wasn't MSRP + $5K but I bet if that was all he could get easily, he would have done that. Man, an eighteen-year-old with a new black Raptor. Yes, I do drool a bit once in a while.

Teenagers driving new Ford Raptors is about 2-3 standard deviations from the norm. Most of America does not live that way...and dealerships can't survive catering to only those chosen few who have $85K to drop on their 18 year old brat.

Oh, they do. They make many times the profit than they do selling lower-end vehicles. Same with manufacturers....even more actually. The manufacturers make most of their profits for the high-end truck and SUVs. Higher-trim SUVs and trucks are their profit centers, and they basically subsidize lower-end sedans and cheaper vehicles. They make 1K plus holdback or just holdback on a small car and 8-10K plus holdback on a large SUV or high-end truck. I used to sell cars in the summers to make extra cash in college , and the bread and butter was the higher-end vehicles. They basically just make holdback on the others. It is/was a little better during Covid but even at MSRP, they were making $2K-$3K.
Big dealers have pretty big overhead so they really focus on the high end sales and used sales. I still know a couple and chat with them at times. The market has become strange, with all these big national conglomerates (Larry Miller/AutoNation/etc.) buying out the individual dealers. HOPEFULLY, things will settle down in another year and we can go back to having control over the dealers.
