They make 1K plus holdback or just holdback on a small car and 8-10K plus holdback on a large SUV or high-end truck. I used to sell cars in the summers to make extra cash in college , and the bread and butter was the higher-end vehicles. They basically just make holdback on the others. It is/was a little better during Covid but even at MSRP, they were making $2K-$3K.
Big dealers have pretty big overhead so they really focus on the high end sales and used sales. I still know a couple and chat with them at times. The market has become strange, with all these big national conglomerates (Larry Miller/AutoNation/etc.) buying out the individual dealers. HOPEFULLY, things will settle down in another year and we can go back to having control over the dealers.

We seem to be talking past each other, which is a shame.
Most of what you say here I agree with. It also misses my main point by about this much.

You do have a choice. Tell the dealership you want to buy but they can stick their gouging price right between the goal posts.
There are not enough $100K Escalade customers out there or enough need to have a ride to survive customers to keep the industry afloat. The power of the purse lies with the customer, not the manufacturer nor the dealership.
Enough people say no, prices will fall.

I hope so... here in NY i dont see it happening soon enough to suit me. i see an awful lot of new automobiles zooming around..
I agree about what you said about about the public "wanting a new ride rather than needing one" case in point. The ESKY story... she didn't need a new one her 4 or 5 year old one was just fine. She saw- she wanted -she signed..

How long are loan terms these days? That payment seems pretty low for the price, esp with car loan interest rates

Most are 72 or 84 months. They can go as high as 120 months.

A friend of mine is shopping and says he is seeing dealers ask MSRP and even say they will go lower if he is serious. I am not sure he will end up with a 4Runner but it is in his top 5. He says a month ago they were not willing to deal at all, so the market is softening. Used prices are coming down and they are willing to negotiate. This is in Colorado. I told him he needed to go drive a few different vehicles before deciding and not just focus on the 4R, so I'm getting feedback from him. With the higher interest rates, the dealers are not able to command as much power with buyers.

I went in last week to have some noise diagnosed on my 2007 forerunner and got a repair estimate for $4500. What is going on with the high price of new and usef vehicles, and repairs?
