Buying a Toyota in the US market has always been strictly from the allocation pool. The pool is just more shallow right now.

Having only one new car buying experience back in 2000, I guess I'm out of touch. Back then, you shopped around a little and usually found what you wanted at a dealer, and delivery was in a couple days or so. No multi month waiting list like now for sure.

Yeah, watching that video I lost count of the reasons he listed for why we are on a few waiting lists for a '22 TRD Off Road Premium w/ KDSS. I have a 2010 Trail w/ KDSS that I paid cash for new, and it has been flawless for 125,000 miles of fly fishing and upland bird hunting. It's as close to the '88 FJ-62 we put 325,000 miles on before we sold it - like idiots! Only reason we sold it was there were no rear 3-point seatbelts and our oldest child grew into a 3-point seatbelt booster seat. '89 was the year shoulder harness seat belts arrived. We're just going to add the current edition of my 2010 Trail to the spot in our garage next to it knowing the 6th gen won't be the same. Then we'll drive that TRD Off Road for the next 15 years too...

I'm hoping to get it by May when the salt is off the road. Luckily we have little choice in Canada so the Off-Road I ordered comes with a sunroof, kdss, the new camera system on the front and sides and climate control. The only thing that can go wrong is the colour but I'm assuming lunar rock will be a popular colour this year.
Since I put my deposit down there was an announcement of a further production cut in Japan so hopefully I get it eventually. If it goes too long and they announce the 2023 will be the same 5th gen I will be ok waiting. Just don't want to miss the last of this generation as this will be my retirement vehicle soon.

My MGM trd pro is supposed to arrive at the dealers at end of the month.
It's got everything I wanted and at MSRP so I'm happy.
There are quite a few port add ons install, but I eventually wanted most of them: black out emblems, trd pro floor mats, cargo cover, hitch ball mount, dual power usb ports w/ cables (although I wish it was just the ports, the extra price for the cables is ridiculous but whatever), hood protector/deflector (didn't really care about it), and lastly, predator tube step (don't want it, hopefully I can sell it as soon as possible)

Congratulations! How long is your wait, from the time you ordered? Was it a "custom order", or did you get on the dealer's list to take something really close from their allocation?

it was not a custom order. I just got lucky with the add-ons on this allocation (if it was up to me, I would not have got predator tube steps, the hood deflector, and the charging cables package)
I told them the only 4runner that I was interested in was a TRD pro and the only color that I would buy was MGM. That was back in October and I put a $500 refundable deposit at the time.
Last month they called me and told me they had an allocation that was arriving at port in January and a few days ago they said it should be on their lot late February.
Hoping everything works out...

I just ordered one too but am now seeing all the posts about the X-REAS suspension issues so I hope I’m not sorry. I’ll be selling my Gen3 Limited which has been rock solid.

I call BS on the video, Not everything is always improved on the newer models.
I kept my 2006 Tacoma after driving my dads 2016 Tacoma. Stiffer, cheap seat materials, MPG were not improved on my drives, the power is not improved and to be honest, it felt like I was driving a car instead of a truck.
I hope things are definitely better for the new 4Runner because I would be looking forward to purchasing one, if not, you'll find me purchasing the last year model of the 5th gen 4Runner.

If you go back to 2009, it's deja-vu.
Some were excited for the 5th Gen in 2010. Some, not so much -- they felt Toyota majorly screwed up.
- No V8
- 4-cylinder as the base engine (the skeptics were right on this one -- Toyota ditched it pretty quickly)
- Added weight (+500 pounds)
- Hard plastics all over the dash and doors
- Removed the locking fuel door
- Removed the soft-close hatch
- Removed the auto-cranking ignition
- Cheap mast antenna replaced the in-glass one from the 4th-gen

Were there a lot of concerns around reliability going from the 4th to 5th gen 4Runner? I wasn't following it then.
I believe there will be a lot of great things about the 6th gen that I would love to have. I test drove and almost bought a 2022 Tundra. I loved the truck but was very apprehensive about it's reliability. The 22 Tundra has more issues than a Yugo. I can't see the 6th gen having this many problems if it's still made in Tahara but I do see turbo issues coming. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I always say, never buy the first year of ANYTHING as big as a vehicle, especially if they're making the major changes to the 4Runner that they say. If you want a reliable 6th Gen, I would wait until at least 2024 or '25. Buying the last year of a model's generation pretty much guarantees all the major bugs have been worked out. Looking forward to our 2022 ORP .

Geeze, man. The truck has been out for 5 minutes. There is a reason why you shouldn't by a first year model and it's to sort out the kinks. Give them a year to work it out and then make a decision. I'm sure it will be great.
I don't disagree that the 5th gen is the pillar for reliability, but every time a new model comes out, regardless of brand, everyone just complains about how the old one is better and then they finally get the new one and realize it's way better. Or there is an issue with the new one with a tiny percentage of the vehicles having said issue and all of the sudden the whole thing is junk and their 1987 model is way better. It's hilarious.

I don't think there were many questions about reliability - mostly because the 5th gen was mostly just a reskin of the 4th gen. The only meaningful changes with respect to the rolling chassis and drive train were the dual VVTI engine change and the rear axle was upsized slightly. Otherwise just cosmetics.
My issue with the 2022 tundra is less that it has some turbo issues, but more that Toyota did not design it for ground level serviceability. That's a significant change in the entire vehicle design philosophy. No repairs I'm aware of on the 2nd gen Tundra - or the 4runner - require cab to come off. It appears that cab-off is a designed part of service now. That means no more DIY repairs for anything you can't easily access on top. That's a big deal for me.
The second issue I have is that Toyota is doing a remarkably poor job of handling the teething issues. In 2007 when the 5.7 had some cam shafts seize and break (according to toyota it was bout 20 total engines), toyota was on top of it. Toyota issued press releases that explained the issue and what was going on. It was a no-question full engine swap.
One case I know of locally - owner bought new tundra 5.7. Cam broke on a road trip in BFE. Toyota had local dealer go get him and his trailer. Engine swap takes a bit to get parts and do the work. So Toyota setup a free temporary lease on another new one so the guy could get on with his trip. Moved his stuff to the new truck and off he went. After the new engine was installed, Toyota shipped the truck to him and took the leased truck back. Toyota also extended the warranty, paid for 2 months of the car payment, and apparently tossed in a TRD Exhaust to compensate for the hassle. <- That is how you handle initial issues well. Toyota corporate is basically ghosting owners with the turbo issues from what I can tell. We'll get it fixed when we get it fixed. Go home. We'll probably call you in a month or two.
