With the possibility of a bad recession right around the corner it would be prudent to just keep making the 5th gen imho.
Im happy that if or when the 6th gen does appear it's built in Japan and not built by the UAW. We won't be buying anything built by UAW again.
I expect when our 2020 hits 250k miles i'll buy another one.

This doesn't pan out in the real world. It makes sense for Toyota to produce one platform, aka TNGA at this point. Keeping the old thing around eternally when their four other models are all on a different platform with different powertrains and different everything could cost MORE money. Economies of scale.
Toyota would have to sell a LOT more hybrids to stay away from EPA CAFE penalties selling the 17mpg 4.0L much longer. And as I remind people, that engine is emissions compliant to 2026 and they probably have little or no economical tricks left to make it compliant past that.
