  • The styling is ok, it's like a blend between 4th and 5th gen. I never liked the styling of the 4th gen but I do mostly like this.
  • I don't like the laid back angle of the windshield or the curve on the hood.
  • While I am a little apprehensive of the small displacement/high output turbo engines, these are still built in Japan so I expect them to be reliable (more than the 3rd Gen Tundra and Sequoia).
  • The new Trailhunter trim looks really nice (despite some of the corny interior decorations).
  • Mudbath and Everest both look incredible.

I am probably not seriously in the market for one of these. I'm still daily driving my 2000 Limited with something like 230k miles on it, but I have been wanting to upgrade for years. I haven't pulled the trigger yet on anything for a multitude of reasons, though.

Years ago when the 3rd gen Tundra was rumored to have a hybrid powertrain, I started saving up because I thought they'd have great mileage. Then they actually came out with barely any bump in MPG over the 2nd gen. Really disappointing. Also my family grew to 5 kids last year (up from 2 in 2019), so any 2-row vehicle isn't going to be viable for all of us. We have a '21 Sienna which is great for family road trips, but I want to be able to take my kids camping and hunting down rough roads in a few years when the younger ones are old enough. I looked at the 3rd gen Sequoia when it came out and it was even more disappointing than the Tundra - no more rolling rear window (which I use all the time on my 4Runner), same crap MPG, and absolutely pathetic cargo space.

Now I don't know what I want to do. I think my only realistic options for taking a family of 7 out are real full-size SUVs (Yukon/Suburban). But for the next few years I'll only be taking the older 2 or 3 kids camping, and I still want something new. This is the first time I've seen a new 4Runner that really appealed to me since the 3rd Gen, though. Can't wait to see one in person.
Why not look for a late model year 200 series? Or Gx460? Both of those seat 7, are proven platforms and have super reliable V8's with similar MPG to entering else, and if you bought one now it would essentially be a brand new car still.

There are still plenty of new GX460's sitting on dealer lots very cheap. There are some 2022 model year new GX's still growing hair on dealer lots. I'd bet you could drive one home new under $50k, probably closer to $40k if you work hard to get a great deal on one.

$50k would be a great price for a new GX460. Where are these located at?

In my area, one Lexus dealership has no new GX460s. They have a certified used 2023 GX460 with 9k miles for $65k and a certified used 2021 GX460 with 42k miles for $52.5k

Just as an example:

This one: cargurus.com

This GX has been for sale since it hit the first dealer it was at (it's at dealer number 2 now) for 1,021 days. That means it was delivered around November of 2021. It's been sitting for just shy of 3 years unsold. The lot plan financing on it has likely reached ~ $10k by now. It should have had at least 3 oil changes by now although surely it's never been serviced. But - the main point is that this is a dog that they can't move and it's growing hair.

I'd bet if you called that dealer and offered $50k, you'd drive it home. I'd email an offer something like this:

Hi salesperson - I'm interested in this 2022 GX. It's a November 2021 delivery that is approaching 3 years for sale, about 18 months on your lot. It's not growing hair - it has a full beard. A new model has been on lots for a while now and prices are softening. There are dozens of stale GX460's still sitting on lots. If you're willing to meet me at a reasonable price I might be agreeable to move it off your lot. I'm at $50k plus tax and I'd require it be serviced prior to deliver due to the age of the fluids being well beyond the service intervals already.

Contact Info.

That's how I'd do it. YMMV. Don't be bashful about lowballing dealers on these old GXs. There's a ton of them still sitting unsold. You could just copy and paste most of your email to the dozen or 20 oldest GXs sitting and I'd be surprised if you don't get a call from all of them, but also probably get at least one to bite at $50k. And one is all you need.

Good luck!

RE: KDSS

The '24 Land Cruiser has better flex numbers with the SDM than the GX550 with eKDSS. The 4Runner will offer SDM. My brother's 250 Land Cruiser has SDM and the road manners are light years ahead of either my '16 Trail w/ KDSS or my '23 Pro w/ Fox suspension. The new platform makes up for the loss of that acronym.

I love the exterior, it's aggressive.

The 2022 GX460 is a very unattractive vehicle.

Didn't like the look of the 6th Gen at first but it's starting to grow on me.

Rear seat on the 6th generation. I saw a video review of the Trailhunter version and I saw that the rear seat doesn't have the drop down middle section like the 5th generation. I'm only asking because my two dogs bounce from the rear seat to the cargo area all the time. My question is if anyone knows if the regular SR5 versions have the same seats in them as the Trailhunter models?

Everything I have seen is that all 6th gen 4r trims share the same 2nd row seat layout unlike the 5th gen. A tumble forward design that seems to be designed for 3rd row access.
