Rollover in real world safety is quite good on the 4Runner. Lots of examples of rollovers I've seen have also held up very well and it has very low occupant death rates. Sometimes the test lab and real world don't match up very well. I'd imagine the new gen is improved. But I don't think the styling is dictated by it. The LC250 is much better IMO.

In this case, the oddness of the look to me is the A pillar sloped back significantly and the long hood combine to move the driver's seat location back quite a bit. I think Toyota had to separate from the LC250 so it went with this style choice.

Even this one the driver supposedly walked away:
But lab is all they have to judge by. I don't think the 5th gen is unsafe, but the manufacturers have to consider that not showing 5 stars on the sticker hurts the sales and potentially insurance rates. I think there's a similar situation with powertrains. Real world, there probably won't be a massive difference between Tacomas with the 6AT and V6 versus those with the 8AT and 4cyl. But, in the emissions testing and the lab fuel economy testing, reporting numbers that are below the standard have real fines/consequences that go along with not meeting those standards.

Anyway, I'm loving this color and the big 3rd gen energy I'm getting. I think I'll be priced out of a Trailhunter or Pro with the 6th gen unfortunately. It took me until 2016 to buy a car that stickered for over $40k. 2023 for one that stickered for over $50k. Probably 2030 before I'm mentally ready to spend $60k on a single vehicle.

Why should Toyota care about offroad-ability? The 6th gen will be good enough for 99% of people. As long as it can fit in the parking lots at the mall it'll be fine.

Looks like a cross between a 4th gen and a 2nd gen. So ugly.

We'll know in a couple of hours. That said, I took out a loan to buy my 3rd Gen for $3,000 4 years back, so I'm clearly not in the market demographic.

I see a lot of 4th gen and not a lot of 3rd gen. But it's pretty subjective. I doubt anyone sees much 5th gen in it though.

Maybe it'll grow on me. The 4th gen never did. I still wouldn't buy one now. Nothing wrong with it. Just styling doesn't work for me. Nor did the LC100. The 5th gen I loved from day 1.

I think mechanically it'll probably be great. The Tacoma tests are seeing real world 25mpg. That's a big improvement over the old one with a lot better drivability. I imagine the new 4R will be a lot nicer to drive in the mountains especially. And I love the option of the inverter and hybrid system, but don't like the Sequoia cargo area, so it'll be interesting to see what this looks like.

For me - I probably won't buy a 6th gen unless it seems really great in person. If it is as it looks initially, it's just too small. Rear seats need to be at least as big as the 5th gen and cargo area was already a bit too small for me. Those rear doors do not look kid friendly. So, it's probably going to end up being too small for me also.

I do love that the new Taco can fit 37's with minor trimming and 35's with very little effort. That's a HUGE improvement. OTOH, I don't think the 8.2 rear end is strong enough for those tires. Especially not with the hybrid powertrain. So I question whether it's as much gain as it seems when it might require axle swaps to run larger tires reliably. IMO that's a big miss on the LC250 - it needed to come with the 9.7/8.9" diffs.

My other concern generally with all the midsize GA-F models is the small fuel tank. It makes towing pretty challenging.

Getting a bit of a Dodge Durango vibe from the look.

Anyway my initial reaction is "meh" and I'll probably be cross shopping the 4Runner, LC, and GX in a few years when ADM settles down.

Being a 24 Pro owner, I like the new design. The updated tech has been a long time coming.

It's probably been 6 years since I posted on here-about the time the lease ran out on my 2016 Trail. I like the look of the new one so far, but then again I like the Tacoma too, so no big surprise. It sort of goes back to the days when the 4 Runner and Toyota Pickup were more like brothers than distant cousins. I am a little surprised they decided to make it larger, considering the downsized Land Cruiser. This seems to put them in pretty much the same segment. I was thinking maybe the 4 Runner would get a small decrease in size and price point, but I guess not. Seems like it wouldn't have been to hard to offer the 6 speed manual either, since the platform, drivetrain, and at least some of the interior is shared with the Tacoma, but we all knew that would never happen. I'll probably end up in a 2025 Tacoma, but maybe I'll go back to a 4 Runner instead. Tough decision, although the 6/M option and my lack of passenger carrying needs makes me lean Tacoma. Overall I think they did a great job designing the 6th Gen!

2025 Toyota 4Runner Reveal & Overview | Toyota - YouTube

Rear door doesn’t look as small in those videos as it did in the pictures leaked. Can’t wait to see these in person, I’m mixed in the design currently.

Toyota says this new 4Runner will be built at the company’s plant in Tahara, Japan, and is scheduled to hit showrooms this fall.

YES!!!! the 4Runner freaking lives on! This was my biggest concern, along with having a standard engine (no hybrid) as an option for reliability reasons.

Thanks for this!
