So many people are dismissing the new 4Runner because it's different. It's uncomfortable for a lot of current 4Runner owners to accept that the new one is a vast improvement over the 5th gen. Again, natural and normal for those financially and emotionally invested in, let's be frank, very expensive vehicles.
I don't think anyone is suggesting Toyota is infallible. Even the "million mile" 2uz-FE v8 had its issues. We were more pointing out how hypocritical it is to dismiss the new powertrain with really no basis or evidence to suggest its unreliable. Toyota fans, for better or for worse, are extremely risk adverse and almost to a fault refuse to accept anything new. You should see the amount of backlash when one mentions the word "hybrid" to some of these diehards and when you present decades worth of data showing how reliable Toyota hybrids are and how they improve power and fuel economy, you get the dumbest responses back.

I think the Tundra is a very good example of why it is likely to be less reliable - at least in the first year or two of production. Toyota should be able to figure out why the v35A is starving the front main bearings for oil. I expect that it'll resolve that problem with a re-design of some internals, but I'm not sure when we'll know it's fixed. All we know at this point is that the V35A has problems. The T24A is a product of the same system. I would expect to see some issues as well. Especially in the first 3 years of production. The V35A is now 5 years into production in the GA-F platform and about 8 or 9 years total. Still not fixed.
Between the V35A and the 1KD - I think the V35A is a better predictor of reliability. As is the 8AR.

That was my first thought. A squared out early 2000s Dodge Durango

In your nsho, which I think is mostly psychobabble. It's unproven. It's more complex. It's a bunch of things, but entirely unproven.
And what makes you think everyone who owns a 5th gen is invested in any way at all.
Fwiw, I sold my 2016 to my stepson and bought '24 TRD OR Prem w/KDSS. It's my vehicle. It's not my baby, it's a truck.
My wife refused my offer to dump her '16 Avalon Touring and write a check for a new Lexus of some sort. She is sentimental.
Me? If I find something I like better I'll write another check, get rid of the '24. Heck, I might give it to my stepson. Then I might even buy a new '24 in each color. It's only money and I have lots of checks left.
Don't go painting everyone with the same brush. You are embarrassing yourself. Some people are more rational than you give them credit for.

This 2016 TEP w/KDSS is a big step up from the 1986 Subaru GL wagon I used on the Outer Banks beaches for 14 years. That thing would go anywhere in the sand on 185/70-13 tires. Dual range 5 speed, factory skid plate, 3 position manually adjustable rear shocks and armored exhaust. All factory, including the white spoke wheels. The front sub frame finally rusted apart.

There's probably a meme GIF somewhere that's appropriate to describe the fandom's reaction whenever there is a redesign.
But I remember all the "No V8. I'll never buy another 4Runner. Toyota is doomed." and the "so glad I bought a 2009" posts.
Change is hard.
At the rate Toyota redesigns the 4Runner, there will be many, many years for folks to accept the 6th Gen. And some never will, and that's OK.
I would like to see what the Platinum looks like and will be interested to see pricing when it's available later in the fall.

Speaking of the need for an engine bay cover to hide the mess, does anyone remember the early spaghetti wired Sony Trinitrons from 50 years or so back? I had a 13" from '74. Great tv once I tightened down the transformer that was squealing and making the dogs howl.

I'd still like to know what exactly failed on TFL's Tacoma. They said it was the A.D.D., but what EXACTLY failed, and what did they do to fix it?
I'm sure the 6th gen 4Runner has the same parts, so do the parts need to be redesigned? Were they?
I've had no problems with the A.D.D. on my 5th gen, or any of my past Toyota 4wd's I've owned with an A.D.D..
So did Toyota try and cheapen a previously reliable assembly?
As for having some overwhelming attachment to my 5th gen, and being uncomfortable that this new 6th gen might be better (remains to be seen), that's laughable. My 5th gen is just another vehicle, in a long line of vehicles I've owned
As for the 6th gen, I'll check them out when they are on dealer lots.

According the SuperfastMatt on YT, since the new Tundra and new 4Runner share the same platform, the front suspension can be swapped to essentially get OEM long travel on the 4Runner. I'm curious to see if anybody does this and how it works
Here's the video at the timestamp

Is the oil starvation you mentioned the issue for the V35A as well?
Why has it not been fixed, does it only happen in rare cases or high mileage models?
