$2000 Tacoma has hit a problem
Sorry, not a Runner, but a '95 Tacoma. I got my friend on to liking Toyota trucks, and he actually bought one after a few months of looking. He traded a rough Mazda for it, and the PO gave him a $700 off the truck for the Mazda. Body needed some work but it ran good. Had truck for a couple months, I did a tune up and body work for him. The truck decided to run on three cylinders. New spark plug wires didn't help, so I got a junkyard cap and rotor, which didn't help, but it was a different cylinder not working. So we took it to his dad's mechanic for safety inspection and told him to troubleshoot this issue. The life of my buddies Tacoma now rests on a compression test. The mechanics say it needs and ECU but the truck still runs, but runs a bit rough. He said it still needs a cap and rotor, it runs on 3 cylinders, but they won't install those until they decide about the ECU. If there's any compression issue, this great old truck is going to junkyard. And we can't get it back from the mechanics. Needless to say, I'm kinda pissed. They say the fuel injectors (all of them) "went bad" and killed the ECU. Even though the truck still runs. I don't trust the shop at all. But it's not my truck and the owners father wants the truck in junkyard to begin with, says it's a waste of money. That's why it's at that mechanics in the first place. So if it is the ECU, they say it'll cost $1500, although I found one for $200 and it's not that hard to change. The rest of the truck is great and I think it's worth fixing, but apparently a compression test will be the deciding factor one whether he pays them $1500 to replace the ECU and then $400 for the cap and rotor, or a good solid Toyota goes to the junkyard. I'd buy it if I had the money and fix it myself or use it for parts for my 4Runner. Just thought maybe some of you would like the story
