Catt's 98 Toyota Supra Turbo full build process

Sharing my Supra build to kill time as I impatiently wait for the call to pick up our new 15' Trail Premium - Mag Gray

In Progress of going fully built Pro efi - as she sits currently

Well, I picked up my 4th Supra in September of 2014 - a 98 TT Supra Auto w/ 70K miles. Sadly, after 30 miles or so of enjoying my new toy, problems started to ensue. A compression test showed 5/6 at 30psi and I've got either a blown head gasket or bad rings. Either way, we were gonna have to take her apart to really know and of course that in itself opened a can of worms. If I was going to be pulling everything apart, well…. I might as well build it, right? At least that was the thinking to my madness of course.

**** 5/19 Confirmed HG blown, with other issues with pistons and rings that were on the verge of going. Pic in thread below

Mod list at purchase:
1998 TT Auto - 70K
Black w/ Tan
MAP ECU
Comp 67 Turbo
Ceramic coated Turbo header
External Waste Gate
Tial BOV
Custom Intake manifold by Inline 6 Performance
Aueromotive Fuel Pressure Regulator
Dual Fuel Pumps
Custom Fuel rail and Lines by Inline 6 Performance
Precision 850CC Injectors
Front Mount Intercooler w/ 2 1/2" piping
Greddy BCC
Innovate WB 02 and air/fuel guage
Autometer Fuel Pressure guage
Autometer Boost Guage
Coolant overflow
Greddy Turbo Timer
HKS Ignition
Greddy Profec B II Boost Contoller
K-Sport Adjustable Coil over struts
Tune by Inline 6 Performance
18" Enkei Black w/ polished lip
Tuned by Inline 6 Performance

Other Misc Items:
Euro hood scoop
TRD Vented Fenders
Viper Alarm w/ remote start
Pioneer AVH-P3200 DVD in Dash 5.8" widescreen w/ Bluetooth
stereo system, premier sub, amp, speakers
Some Carbon Fiber engine dress parts

Now, I've had supra's on and off starting in 2001. Originally, I was looking for a stock or BPU TT and came across a deal I couldn't turn down on a Comp67 Single Turbo by Inline 6 Performance. I had spoke to both the owner and Inline 6 Performance about the build and car and everything tested out great during the purchase process and nothing seemed to be wrong with the car. So I had her shipped to Kansas. It was (or so I thought) already more than I needed really.

It was raining on delivery day, so she went from the truck to the garage

and of course I had to Zaino her up:

So, as I stated 30 miles later, she was idling rough and sounded like a diesel chugging along. As you can probably imagine I was not very happy, but what's done is done and now I must fix her. Blow HeadGasket, amongst other issues we find once we tear her down. This engine was running HOT. Being in Kansas City doesn't provide you many shop options that I was used to back in my Dallas days. I know quite a bit about parts, and can talk the game but I've never done more than basic bolt on parts - although I've always wanted to learn. Thus enter my Wrench Master Chris. I also call him Ghost. Teaching me the ways and getting my hands dirty. It's been an awesome experience and knowing that I built this with my own hands (with help) is a really cool feeling.

Of course, this wouldn't be complete if I used a stock Tranny - no. I snagged a a built auto trans w/ full set up Boost Logic Tranny w/ PI 3600 Stall converter from Rick S. Also included 2 B&M trans coolers, 2 spal cooler fans, brand new -6an ss braided line, 2 fittings to attach the ss braided line at the trans, a brand new external screw on filter with mount and all fittings, a brand new internal filter, and a brand new Lexus deep oil pan. Rick also was great at helping me trouble shoot some issues I was having during this time, super nice guy.

With these purchases made, it was time to pull the motor. I really wanted to learn and help do this process. Chris said he'd help me do it and teach me along the way, so I was super pumped to complete my first engine pull. We spent Saturday and Sunday of last week going through her. Here are some pics.

Still more work to be done. I want to clean up the engine bay and get everything nice and clean before we put the new motor in.

Delivery minutes after posting this thread, coincidence? probably, I was expecting them today…

Titan G2 Cam Gears and ID1300s arrived:

Got the old motor on the engine stand today. Got the Cam gears, valve covers and cams out. It was my first time, and even though it was pretty simple after actually doing it, I was still pretty proud of myself. I'm hoping to get into her sometime this week to find out what the issue is and I'll of course post up some pictures.

I have plans to do a wire tuck and clean up the engine bay, then paint it. The new long block should be shipped out by Wednesday as well as the arrival of some of my PHR parts. Should be like Christmas soon. I'm really wanting some CCW Classics or Work Meister S1… I'm on the search. Not a fan of the Enkei wheels she came with. I'm sure I'll have tons of stuff for sale after this.

A few pics, plus baggies for day. Gotta stay organized.

*** 4/24/15 ***
Got more of her torn down. Oil pan a sub pan are off, plan on getting the head off this weekend to see what's going on. definitely metallic flakes in the oil. I'm contemplating selling my comp67 turbo and getting a precision 6266. Decisions, Decisions. Still waiting on the built long block arrival and some other miscellaneous items. I'll be powerdercoating anything I can black.

UPDATE: Took apart current block and found the issues.
Took the head apart and discovered a blow HG. Also, the pistons are NOT in good shape, neither are some of the rings. Some minimal scoring in the cylanders. Easy fix. But I will need to take it to a machine shop to make sure it's level since it obviously got really hot.

Minimal cylander scoring, but there is a little up and down present. Not bad though.

We found a large chunk of metal in the oil pan, there was definitely metalic flakes and shaving as the oil pan had that gray metallic sheer to it, but also a large piece that after looking through everything appears to have been here underneath the cams. Just a guess, but we couldn't find anything else. Here is the large metal piece we found in the oil pan, and a shot of where we think it possibly is from.

Blow Headgasket between 5 & 6

Pistons are in rough shape

As she sits right now

Goodies ** 5/18/15**

First, the built block is here!

Proefi with all the goodies arrived as well

I've pulled gauges and all items I can get sent over to Stu Hagen for the LED upgrade. The previous owner decided to change to the white reverse indigo gauges…. they had. to. go.

Stu and I are working on a custom design, so more to come on that later.

Also pulled tons of wires not needed due to the Viper aftermarket alarm and start that was on the car. I really don't want more wires than necessary so it was great to pull unnecessary stuff and know it wasn't going back in.

I"m also taking the opportunity to clean things up, and will be painting my block. I'm in the process of stripping/cleaning the "new" built block I purchased. There is some surface rust on there. I wasn't overly excited but with some time and elbow grease I will get it all cleaned up before putting it all back together.

Also got the sub pans cleaned up. First, I took a razor blade and removed the Toyota Black gunk. Be careful not to use the edge, just slide it over with pressure. You can get a screwdriver to help get stuff out of the grooves and holes you see on the lower pan or a wire brush. Again, don't use the edge of the razor blade on the upper pan since it's aluminum as you don't want to gauge or dig into it. Then, power wash which helped clean the exterior portions extremely well. I'm thinking about painting them with a high temp paint, will just take a scotch brite pad and some break cleaner to scratch it up for high temp paint to adhere. That's what I'm currently doing with my block to remove that surface rust.

Got the Boost Logic Transmission out that I bought from Rick S and switched that out as well.

update: I have all my parts that I've ordered here. Now the build has begun and hopefully will be on the road soon enough.

It's crazy what you find when you buy used things, there are some people who don't know what the hell they are doing. Found out the block I bought had a few innacurate things, some bad some good but nothing that stops the progress. I was originally told there was GSC springs, but they are actually BC Springs. No biggie since I'm not going higher than 750 and honestly aiming for a moderate tune. I was also told I would be recieving a billet tensioner, that was not the case. Definitely frustrated here as it's something I thought I was able to mark off my list. Moved on, and bought it from PHR. Lastly, the good news was that I was told I had Crower 280s - but once I pulled them they were actually GSC S2s. Jackpot, since I knew I wasn't wanting such an aggressive cam I easily sold them and bought some HKS 264s.

I've gotten the subpans on, new PHR modified oil pump and the HKS Cams in. Not much but it feels good to be building up instead of tearing down.

In the meantime, I've marked a few more things off my list. I bought the OCD Billet Valve and Coil Covers with the group buy that is going on. I also snagged up a pair of CCW Classics from a local who is going with some TE37s. WIN! It's crazy to think about what I've purchased in the past few months but it will be worth it once she is all back together.

At this point, the only thing lingering over me is my turbo. I have a COMP 67mm and it only has 5K on it with no shaft play. It's in great condition, but I really think I want to get a Precision Turbo, maybe 6266, 6466 or 6766.

Thanks everyone. I am already married, but I appreciate the offer.

it's not an unlimited budget, because if that was the case I would have other stuff going on with this, but it's a nice, hefty budget. I've really tried to help my budget with getting some barely used items or through hooks ups I have with at cost parts. For instance I came across the PROefi that someone had bought and decided to go another route, so it was BNIB and I picked up for less than wholesale. Definitely helps when you are patient and wait for the deals to jump on them.

I've also sold a bunch of my old parts from the original build as well that has helped off set some of the cost.

Should be taking her to the shop this month to get the wiring and PROefi all installed and tune... .can't wait!

Got some updates here, The engine has been dropped in and is pretty much ready for wiring/electrical.

I also received my gauges back from a member apart of the Supra community who does custom work with LED and gauges. The stock is all green. I went with white and a blue needle as I really like my Lexus interior so that was my inspiration.

I also came across a steal of a deal on these TRD wheels. They are discontinued and people sell them for ridiculous money, so I set a budget and probably offered cash on 7 wheels before one came along for what I wanted to spend on it. It's mint

Finally got around to working on the car this weekend after a month off. Fuel system is a go. My buddy Chris did a custom bracket on the OEM hanger for the dual pumps to keep them separated and from touching. He even had the handy dandy Toyota tool to tighten the hanger down so we didn't mess it up. Oh yeah, got my PT6266 too, all coated and everything!! So my Comp 67 is officially for sale!

Turbo arrived, she's pretty.

Here is the hanger and bracket

Injectors and Ross machine rail on

I don't normally jump ahead just to take pics but... I had to throw on the turbo and intake
