My 2022 Honda Ridgeline ownership was not a good one from buying process to quality issues. So after 42k miles, I traded it in for an AMERICAN car for the first time in my life.

2023 Ford F150 Platinum Powerboost with the monster 7.2kW ProPower Onboard generator and FX4 package.

More details: Star White Metallic Tricoat; Black leather interior; March 2023 production with 3.5 miles on odometer

MSRP: $78,755 (no dealer add-ons)

Sale price = $73,748 (after some negotiations)

Aftermarket parts that I want on the truck = $3,694 (includes spray bedliner, Ford 3-piece hard folding bedcover, door edge guards X-film, Catalytic converter plates, truck bed tray/rubber mat, wheel well liners).

Ford extended warranty 6 years / 125k miles = $3,205.

Trade-in of 2022 Honda Ridgeline with 42k miles and big cracked windshield = $32,000 (KBB has it around $31k-33k……after buying the car, I found my Honda on same dealer’s used car lot for $36,444)

Math time: 73,748 + 3694 + 3205 = $80,647 - $32,000 (trade-in) = $48,647


FINAL drive out price after TTL = $51,977.77. Bought last day in August 2023.

Not the greatest deal but I could not get them to go down to $50k OTD over a week of negotiation. Oh well, I did get everything that I wanted on the truck.

Additional accessories I bought afterwards include: ceramic windows tint front, splash guards front & rear, passenger side swing out storage unit for bed, and a bed divider.

This is the main reason why I got this truck….7.2 kW generator on board that can power part of my house for a few days.

4 regular outlets in bed. PLUS a 30 amp 240 volt outlet.

This is with lights AND one AC unit/furnace turned on. About 2000 watts. Not sure if the two fridges were running.

My truck max is 7200 watts. So I have plenty of headroom!

Ford quotes 7200 watts + 1 full gas tank = 32 hours.

But at 2000 watts (or a lot less because AC is not gonna run all the time) = probably 3-4 days at least….

Happy for you about your purchase. Your investment in the extended warranty was very wise. Not that the Powerboost engine will shoot craps but they are expensive to repair if anything does go wrong.

Tested my truck today. Started the F150's generator at 10:40 to power my house.

My truck read 511 miles to empty at beginning of test.



After 1 hour of my truck powering the house, I lost 2 miles in driving range.





During this hour, I had my single AC (2 ton) unit set at 76 degrees inside master bedroom (ran a few times during the hour). Lights were ON, Wifi routers ON, 2 mobile fans at max speeds in the family room, 2 fridges on and off (big fridge and smaller one), and my laptop was charging.

My F150 was ON, but AC and display of infotainment were OFF and car was locked.

Given that a full gas tank nets me around 605 or so miles, my truck can easily support my house for over a week on ONE gas tank.

So, you've got an $80K+ stand-by gen set for your house. I think I could do it for less.

It is a (very nice) side benefit of owning a F150 PowerBoost (PB).

When my Honda Ridgeline became problematic, we went searching. We needed a truck for sure…something with a bigger bed than Ridgeline. We needed a large enough vehicle for vacation with kids (Ridgeline was cramped for 5 people) that was also decent on gas (Land Cruiser sucking down gas gets old fast). Having a portable 7.2 kW generator is pretty damn nice on the go. We do lots of yard work…so having this truck with a bed and generator is very convenient. And it was a deciding factor b/w the new Tundra and F150 PB. If Tundra had this option, then heck yeah, i would have gone with Toyota. (FYI, Tundra iMax only has a 2 kW inverter/generator…2024 Tacoma/Land Cruiser has a 2.4 kW generator.)

A few years ago, we did look into getting a natural gas Generac for our house. Cost was $20-25k. Of course, it would have been a much better option than a truck to power our house. But, at $20-25k initial investment and then you have maintenance costs (annually and then every 10 yrs, a major tune-up that is $$), we held off. And the Generac would be at ONE location all its life and gets used maybe 1x per year at most? So, that is a lot of investment (and on-going cost) for a rarely used non-mobile generator.

I also have a portable 2100 watt gasoline generator and 3 Jackery Li-ION batteries. These are good options but have their own drawbacks. I would have to run long long cords with the gasoline generator that is noisy as heck and has to be placed outside due to fumes…….and it may grow legs and “walk away” on its own and/or disturbed neighbors. Jackery is nice but limited in its use and then i have to find a way to charge it after it runs out of juice……and that was why i have the 2100W gas generator…plan was to juice up the Jackery again also with that gas generator.

So, with this PowerBoost, i have a portable very powerful generator (7200 watts) that is unmatched by any portable generators yet decent enough to power my house when i need to. And compared to most portable generators, it is whisper quiet. It is really the best of both worlds. (And yes i can use PB to re-juice my Jackery Li-IONs batteries if i need to.)

$80k price tag of PowerBoost is not from the 7.2 kW generator option…it is actually quite cheap option box ($750.00 option) that you can add to lesser F150s. $80k is because i want luxury for my daily driver AND vacation vehicle. And i can use my PB to emergency charge up my brother’s Tesla on a long trip.
