Hilux or Fortuner? 2.4 or 2.8?

Am hopping Islands and headed to the Philippines, which I thought I would never do. Thought my 4Runner was going to be my forever vehicle.

My wife is wanting me to slant towards buying a Hilux and have been thinking about a Fortuner. They have options in the Fortuner for a 2.4 or 2.8 Liter diesel and same on the new Hilux.

Does any one have any preferences? Am leaning towards the Hilux because wont have a utility trailer to haul stuff with.

Please let me know your preferences on the 2.4 or 2.8, thanks. Jim

Besides being jealous of your options, I can only speak to my 3rd Gen Hilux Surf with a 3.0 Diesel and itís been ultra reliable. The only thing I donít like are timing belts and know my 5.7 Tundra is timing chain. That would be my main decision maker if either one was timing chain.

Thank you for replying, Will take that into consideration. It looks like the 2.8 diesels are all 4 wheel drive versus 4x2 which all are 2.4 in the Hilux. Apparently they call 2 wheel drive 4x2 so it looks like it will be 2.8 in the Hilux for 4 wheel drive.

Looks like the motors there are 1GD-FTV and with a little digging says that they are indeed chain driven camshafts and crank. It is a new motor came out in 2015 and looks like they have worked out the bugs already. Apparently the 3.0 diesel was out for quite awhile. Thanks again BUDS590.
