Is this a serious question?

You've got what is probably the class leader in hybrids vs. a cheap korean sports coupe wannabe. They are entirely different types of cars.

I've never known anyone that was happy with a Hyundai 4-5 years down the road. I know plenty of people who are happy with their toys 10+ years down the road.

Have you driven either of them yet? They are totally different cars aimed at very different markets...I'm not really sure you can compare the two. The Prius is not supposed to be a sporty car.

I found the Prius a bit annoying (power and horrible styling/interior aside) becasue it makes weird sounds. The reason being when you take away engine sound you get to hear all the other ticks/clicks/whirring sounds that still go on in a car but that the engine usually drowns out. Would drive me crazy...though if i had a long commute and was in a state that still let hybrids use the HOV lane I'd think about getting one.

Very different cars for sure, not sure how you'd compare them. All depends on what you're looking for.

I have to say though I know a few people that have bought Hyundai's and have had great luck with them. I won't say they're to Toyota quality but my in laws bought a Sonata new in '03. Still driving just fine for them today w/ ~130km's (~70miles) on it and no problems. With the Hyundai though you'll feel the pain at trade-in time as they lose alot of value.

Agreed...the 3rd gen Prius is just superb...and it is pretty cheap, relatively speaking.

BTW, John, i read in an independent review of the Prius that there are plenty of Toyota hybrids that serve as Taxis...and they have gone well over 200,000 miles trouble free!! I think that Toyota is dead serious about proving the reliability AND durability of the hybrid system. Just wait until the Prius comes out with the Plug-In option...that will bring it to a whole new level of efficiency!

Taxi's had a lot of incentives to switch to hybrids. Many cars go 200k +.

The point is that Prius has proven itself to be reliable and durable under the harshest condition for a car. 200+k miles in a taxi is a lot different than 200+k miles in a family car.

What's the difference?

During my High School and College days, I used to deliver pizzas and easily reached 200K+ miles with no probs. Maintenance (Oil change, brakes, and tranny lube, etc) was almost every other month tho. lol But the car ran like a champ. THEN i have my other car which i drove to class, church, malls, cruisin and reached 200K+ in 6 yrs vs the pizza car in 1 1/2 yrs. haha...

Let's face it, Toyota's HSD is every bit as reliable, if not more reliable than some pure gas burners. There are taxi's that have seen 300k as well and a few have gone past 400k without any trouble.

Taxi's get the daylights abused out of them, simply because most, if not all are driver leased. Even family cars get more respect than a taxi. I have not seen ONE taxi driver drive in a civilized manner.

Prius stats speak for themselves and some Toyota execs believe the Prius will become Toyota's best selling model. Obviously something is good about the car if it is that popular. And in today's economic climate, there is a waiting list for it. Let's see what other models are drawing that kind of demand.
