Carolina Beaches

So I recently purchased an 05 Sport V8 end want to take it on the beach. I plan on going down to Fort Fisher here in the near future and will be in the northern OBX this summer. She is sitting completely stock on basically brand new Michelins. Will I be fine driving our beaches with just an air down? Anything else I should know or prepare for?

Edit* Adding all the videos to the main page to reduce navigation

Ive always been ok with not airing down, but that was down at Freeman Park at Carolina Beach. Never been out to the OBX with my t4r yet. Congrats on the new ride.

I live in CB and have my entire life. I'd air down at freeman park. Having driven out there for years I've done it aired down and not, and survived. Have buried myself a few times without airing down, but that could have been operator error.

It's easier to air down and back up after, than it is get out of burying yourself if you happen to.

If you don't air down you leave a washboard effect in the sand road. In the OBX the locals will have something to say about that. Consider the next people driving the road. This site used to be mostly for making fun of inconsiderate wheelers. Now it's mostly local info.

I've been down to Ft. Fisher the past two weekends. Since the annual beach pass at Ft. Fisher is $50, I figure using it is a good idea. The sand there is pretty fluffy, and I've seen people stuck both times. I air down to between 20 and 25 psi. Airing down is cheap insurance. There is free air at the Ft. Fisher Trading post about a mile up the road at: 33.9861465,-77.910654 (google map).

It doesn't hurt to bring a 5 gallon bucket (for water), 4 strips of 2'x6' carpet remnant, a shovel, and a recovery strap either. I think a tow costs at least $150.

Here I am at crossover 2:

Ended up getting a season pass to Fort Fisher and made the trip a few times. The sand there was super soft and airing down helped alot. It was nice though as it was not super crowded. By comparison I also visited the Corolla offroad area in the OBX and it was like pavement

Up on the Outer Banks, the hardest part is getting through the access points most of the time. Once you're on the beach, it gets easier.

I want to try Cape Lookout sometime.

Are any of these vehicles still there? They used to use junk cars to prevent erosion. I wonder how they got them there. I'd like to visit it sometime too.

another trip to Fisher. This was from Easter Sunday, had to navigate through a flock of jeeps to get to the water...next trips include a return trip to the outer banks hatteras up through corolla and a trip to lookout in a couple of months

I can't see pictures.

Anyway there's a new air down law for Corolla and Carova (Currituck County).

"Air down": Currituck requires flatter tires on beach where wild horses roam in hopes that fewer people get stuck | Traffic & Transportation | pilotonline.com

As far as your question is concerned.....YES.....however the only way to enforce it is if you get stuck, the sheriff comes by, and finds out you didn't air down. So if you dont get stuck they would never know!

With that being said you should air down, not just because of getting stuck, but because its better for other drivers on the beach as the trails are smoother and easier to navigate

EDIT* I went through and added an actual youtube link to all the videos that would hopefully work on mobile/tapatalk
