Antennae motor - pull or not?

Mast is broken (absolutely nothing wrong with motor) and I'm ready to replace.

I oogled it and came up with 2 opinions: "replace mast without pulling motor", and, "on first gens you must remove motor to replace mast because of some clips".

So, which is it?

Thanks

Thanks for the confirmation.

Turns out I'm going with something different....a rubber, unbreakable antennae.

Looks better anyways, imo.

I replaced mine just before I left. Had my 4runner in the garage as far as it would go and turned the radio on, not even thinking. Bent the hell out of my brand new antenna.
