95 4runner Error code 26; I'm stumped.

Hello all,

I have a 95 4runner w/169,000 miles that generally runs really well, 17.6 overall MPG, minus a couple of issues. I have a CEL that comes and goes, but mostly stays on that flashes the following code:

26 Air-Fuel Ratio Rich.

I have replaced the 02 sensor with a brand new one. The CEL went away for about 4 days and I thought I had found the source. Unfortunately the CEL came back and is flashing the same code 26. Any ideas as to what to turn to next?

This truck also has a high idle problem. I've been told by a mechanic that the Throttle Body is simply worn to the point that it will not idle correctly. It wants to idle at about 1500 rpms. Cleaning the throttle body has made the problem worse so I'm assuming that he is correct. I am shopping for a good used TB, but it really doesn't affect the performance that much; if I snap the gas pedal it will usually drop down and idle correctly at about 750 rpms.

Does anyone think the TB could be the cause of this code 26? I am mechanically inclined, I work on Digital Printing Presses for a living, but am somewhat new to working on automobiles. I would love to figure this out and fix it myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm assuming that it's a v6? I'm not very familiar with the V6's, but you could just have a sticky throttle cable or a weak return spring. If you're able to "snap" the gas pedal, that tells me that it's not related to the throttle body. I would look more in the direction of your throttle cable, return spring, or even gunk on your gas pedal assembly that would cause your pedal, cable or TB to stick.

^^^^ Idle issues...

Scroll down to EG1-117. There it will explain what your code is and what some of the common solutions are to fix it. It should point you in the right direction.

So far I've pulled the EFI fuse for about 5 minutes to reset the code and haven't seen the CEL (code 26) come back for a couple of days. I'm just waiting to see if it comes back before I pursue further.

Upon inspection I don't think my idle problems are caused by the gas pedal, throttle cable or return spring; they all seem to be in good condition and working properly. I've got a known to be good TB coming in the mail so we will see.
