Conflict with stock tire size info.

I have a 1995 SR5 V6 4wd automatic with tow package. The gear code is G144 which translates to 4.88. The label in the door jam states it came with 225/75-r15. EVERY chart I see states it came with 31-10.5, which it has. The 3.slow is a dog so I thought the tires might be too large, but now I'm not so sure. Tire store thinks the label is wrong and it came with the 31s. Any idea as to which size is most likely correct? Thanks!

Pretty sure 4.88s came in automatic trucks with 31s. If you wanna be sure, jack one tire into the air and spin it 720 degrees while counting the number of times your driveline spins. If you really have 4.88s, then your label is almost certainly wrong.

It could have come stock with 31s...Ive heard say Toyota some times forgot to change the tire info on the door jam tag. If it has the auto and a towpackage, and you think it came with 31s, then 4.88s sound right to me.

And the 3.0 isnt the dog, that auto tranny is.

I agree (auto tranny)

Also, my 3.0 is no dog, it's a wolf.

Thanks to all for the info. I'll stick with the 31s and search for transmission options. Maybe the transmission is contributing to the 13mpg and not the 3.0. I just bought the 4runner (my first) due to it's condition and narrow body style. I was surprised by the power and fuel mileage, but overall it's worth it. I was really surprised how close the wheelbase and size are to my 04 Wrangler, and SO much more room.

The only option would be to swap in a manual trans and t-case.
