Right front axle play at the differential

I was checking out the new (1995) to me 4runner and noticed the left right cv joint has a lot of play at the diff. The play is in the diff where the cv goes in. Is this normal? I couldn't find any threads after doing a search. Thanks

I know you said left front, but do you mean the passenger front? The splines get loose over time, and there is a bearing in there..but As long as its not leaking its probably fine. Its alot of work to pull that diff out.

Happened to me this summer:

I've been told that a little play on the axle shafts is normal, and not a huge deal unless it's leaking or grinding or otherwise misbehaving.

Yep. Right side. The left side has a torn boot and no grease. groan. The valve covers are leaking too badly to tell if the diff is leaking. I picked up the gaskets for the valve covers so once they're done I'll know more. I may just toss some UV dye in the diff. Nothing like buying a vehicle with 174k miles on it. Luckily it's a Toyota and was garage kept so the body is fine.

Smell the oils. Haha. Diff oil smells very different than engine oil.

I tried to smell the oil, check the viscosity etc. when I noticed the play. I didn't detect any gear lube, but everythings pretty soaked from the valve cover leaks. I'll replace the diff seal when I install the new alxles while changing the uneven brake disc while... Good times.

Soak it down with some grease killer, Simple Green or that purple stuff.

And unless it's leaking, don't worry about the play. I asked my gear guy how much play was normal there, and his exact words were "just a bit more than you think there ought to be".
