Classic T4R help

Just sold an '01 Tacoma and am now interested in a classic T4R. I know how legendary the 4 cyl 22re engine is, but how is the stock 6 cyl engine on these? Any common problems I should be looking for on these trucks? Any help would be appreciated!

Try to find a 4cyl. The 3.0l is prone to head gasket failure due to a poor exhaust design. The 3.0l has a chain driven transfer. It's not as strong as the 4cyl. case but will do fine to stock to mild builds. The 4cyl case has much more gearing and doubler options as well.

I have had my 3.0 for about two years and the only problem I have had is an alternator issue. So far its been very reliable. Have heard many, many bad things about the hg issue. Because of that, he first thing I did to mine was put in a more free flowing exhaust system with a magnaflow hi flow cat and muffler. A 4cyl is def preferred by most, but I have sure been happy with mine so far and there many people also happy with there 3.slows.

Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback. I just found a 5 speed w/ a 22R engine that was rebuilt 5k miles ago (truck has 223K on it). Asking $3k, seems a little hi tho. Not sure what the market in socal is.

22r or 22re? The 22re is gutless, the 22r is downright wimpy. Might be worth it if it's an '84 or '85, though.

I know would've loved an '85, but it's an '86. And it's a 22R w/ 35" tires, so am worried about having enough power.

Then of course there's the opposite experience.

Everything with my 3.0's been garbage, and I've only owned it 3 weeks. And its got 30k on a rebuild.

When I bought mine i did look into the history and the PO did have paperwork for most of the oil and fluid changes. Since I've owned it I have religiously change oil every 3k-4k miles and flushed all fluids. Mine did have the HG changed in 2001. I do drive and treat it like a rolls royce except when Im wheeling.

Buy it and watch the classifieds for solid axles. I'll be selling a rebuilt one with 4.88's soon. ;)
